Dezmen Southward is in his first season as a graduate assistant for the defense.
Southward comes to Ames after spending five seasons as a safety in the NFL for the Atlanta Falcons (2014-15), Indianapolis Colts (2015) and Carolina Panthers (2016-18). He played in 20 NFL games, registering 24 tackles and one interception.
Southward was the 68th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
A native of Sunrise, Fla., Southward was a star player at Wisconsin from 2010-13, starting 30 of 54 games played. A two-time Honorable Mention All-Big Ten pick, Southward recorded 154 tackles, 11.5 TFL, four forced fumbles, two interceptions and 11 pass breakups in his career. Â
He is a 2013 graduate of Wisconsin.
