Houston Griffith is in his first season serving as assistant defensive backs coach at Iowa State.
Griffith joined the Cyclone football program after spending the 2025 season at Illinois, where he helped lead the Fighting Illini to a 9-4 record and a win in the Liberty Mutual Music City Bowl in his first season as assistant defensive backs coach.
He was also an offensive assistant (2024) and recruiting assistant (2023) in his three years at Illinois. During his tenure, he helped the Illini to 24 victories, two bowl wins and back-to-back seasons with nine or more wins for the first time in program history.
Griffith played collegiately as a defensive back at Notre Dame from 2018-22. He left the school as the program record holder having played in 62 career games and competing in the College Football Playoff. He was a member of Notre Dame’s Football Leadership Council.
He started his high school playing career at Mount Carmel High School before transferring to IMG Academy (Fla.) where he was a consensus Top-100 player in the 2018 class.
Griffith’s father Howard was an all-time great at Illinois from 1987-90 and went on to spend 10 seasons in the NFL, including as a member of two Denver Broncos’ Super Bowl Championship teams.
The Chicago, Illinois, native earned his bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame in 2021.
