Mike Banks is in his first season coaching the Iowa State cornerbacks in 2026.
Banks arrives in Ames following stints with head coach Jimmy Rogers at Washington State and South Dakota State.
Banks was a part of a defensive unit at Washington State that allowed just 20.2 points per game and ranked 14th nationally allowing just 172.8 passing yards per game during the regular season. In the regular season’s final eight games, the Cougars gave up just 12.7 points per contest.
In total, WSU opponents scored 10 points or less in six games.
Prior to Washington State, Banks was on Rogers staff at SDSU for two seasons in a similar capacity. The Jackrabbit defense led Football Championship Subdivision in scoring defense twice on its way to winning the national championship in 2023 and reaching the semifinals in 2024.
The 2024 Jackrabbit defense was fifth in FCS in total defense and registered 14 interceptions.
Banks helped develop First Team All-American Dalys Beanum who registered 46 tackles, one interception and four pass breakups in 2024. On the other side, Colby Humphrey garnered All-Missouri Valley Football Conference second-team honors.
The Jackrabbits’ other starting corner in 2023, DyShawn Gales, was a Second Team All-MVFC pick.
Banks joined the SDSU staff in February 2023 after spending seven seasons at his alma mater, Illinois State. He was associate head coach, co-special teams coordinator and cornerbacks coach his final five seasons with the Redbirds, developing three all-conference performers and an All-American in Luther Kirk.
The Redbirds reached the FCS Playoffs twice, including a run to the quarterfinals in 2019. Illinois State finished in the top 25 in passing yards allowed all five seasons that he coached the cornerbacks.
Banks also gained experience in 2020 as a Bill Walsh Fellowship Coaching Intern with the Los Angeles Chargers. He was also selected to attend the 2022 AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute.
Banks, a University Park, Illinois native, started four years at cornerback for Illinois State from 2011-14, earning Second Team All-MVFC accolades in 2014 and helping lead the team to the FCS National Championship game that season.
Banks received his bachelor’s degree in health education from Illinois State in 2015 and his master’s degree in psychology of sport and physical activity from the school in 2018.
