Former Cyclone gymnast Ashley Kent was named assistant gymnastics coach Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne announced Nov. 29, 2010.
“As a three-year captain of the Cyclones, Ashley was the strongest team leader I have encountered in over 20 years in coaching collegiate gymnastics,” Ronayne said. “She was also a fierce competitor, especially on balance beam, which will be quite an asset to our team as she takes on the full responsibility of our balance-beam squad. Ashley’s personality is the perfect fit for our team and coaching staff, and I look forward to her influence taking the Cyclones to even greater heights this year.”
Kent, a native of Calgary, Alberta, was a member of the Iowa State gymnastics team from 2006-2010 and was a regular on beam and bars during her time as a Cyclone. She was also a member of the 2006 Cyclone unit that earned the program’s lone berth in the Super Six. Kent suffered a season-ending knee injury during her sophomore campaign, resulting in her receiving a medical redshirt season.
In addition to excelling in the competition arena, Kent was outstanding in the classroom while she was a student-athlete at Iowa State. A three-time Academic All-Big 12 First-Team recipient, Kent also earned Scholastic All-America honors every year she competed for the Cyclones. In 2010 Kent was named Iowa State’s CHAMPS Female Performer of the Year, an award the goes to the Cyclone student-athlete who best exemplifies academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development, career development and community service. Kent earned a Big 12 Conference postgraduate scholarship in 2010. She graduated from Iowa State with a 3.83 cumulative grade-point average in May 2010.
“I am really excited to be back at Iowa State and for the opportunity to coach,” Kent said on her hiring. “I am honored to be a coach of the team I was involved with for five years. I look forward to our season starting and helping our young squad prepare it.”
Kent has coached at Cardinal Gymnastics Academy in Ames since graduating from Iowa State.
