- Starred in multiple sports before working in the department’s development office (becoming Director of the National Cyclone Club in 1985)
- Played defensive end for two years, he moved to receiver as a senior and led the Big Seven in receiving (33-548) on the way to earning all-league honors
- Standout swimmer, he competed on an All-America 400-yard freestyle relay team that set a league record
- Won the Big Seven 100-yard freestyle event two times
- Iowa State’s 1952 Athlete of the Year, he was also named Cy’s Favorite Alum in 1992 for his contributions to the school after graduation
