AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (13-11, 7-6 Big 12) fell in a battle to BYU (20-1, 12-0 Big 12) by set scores of 19-25, 24-26, 33-31, 25-20 Saturday.
Iowa State did not go down without a fight to BYU, a team that has 11 sweeps on the season and the lone undefeated team in the Big 12. ISU extended the second and won a marathon of a third set, but could not force a fifth. The 33-31 set score was BYU's longest set this season.
Nayeli Gonzalez heated up in the third and ended the day with 17 kills at .350 to go along with four blocks and three digs. Gonzalez now totals 15 double figure kill matches this season and 40 on her career.
Freshman D'Aaliyah Kemp also hit in double figures with 11, while putting up three blocks. Fellow freshman Macie Lupkes tied for the match lead with six blocks.
Nayeli Ti'a had crucial kills late in the third and came one kill shy of a double-double with 13 digs and nine kills. The senior is now five kills away from 1,000 on her career.
Rachel Van Gorp extends her streak to 16 matches with 10-plus digs as the libero saved 18 attacks. Van Gorp also served to three aces, tying her season high.
SET ONE
Kemp put down her second early kill to pull within one, while a BYU attack error came next to tie the score at 4s. Another tie came at the next point, but BYU then went on a run. Gonzalez stopped it run putting down a kill to make it 8-6 and shortly after Kemp found open court for her third kill (9-8). BYU then stretched a lead of five as ISU followed calling a timeout at 14-9. Kemp had two late kills, bringing her set total to six, to pull ISU within five (22-17) but the Cougars kept control of the lead to win it 25-19.
SET TWO
An Ella Florez ace and Ti'a kill started the Cyclones out 2-0, and Kemp's seventh kill without an error put ISU up 3-1. BYU took the lead to follow, while Kemp put down a match-leading eighth kill making for a tie at 5s. Iowa State stayed with BYU, keeping it within one at 12-11 after a huge save by Van Gorp and the Cyclones went on to take a lead of 15-13. BYU then called a timeout at 18-14 after a Cyclone run of three led behind the serving of Van Gorp. Iowa State reached 20 at 20-15 on the fifth kill at .500 by Gonzalez, but after the Cougars came back within two (21-19) ISU called a timeout. At 21-20, Alea Goolsby hit a kill while Kemp and Macie Lupkes put up a block. After a BYU timeout, the visitors came back to take the lead and reach set point but a Goolsby kill kept the set going. BYU would take the next two to go up 2-0 in the match.
SET THREE
Pam McCune sent over a quick kill as the score was brought to an early tie at 3-3, and ISU took a 5-4 lead on a McCune and Kemp block. Iowa State was the first to 10 after Ava Martin snuck over a setter kill and Goolsby and Lupkes put up a block, but BYU flipped the lead at 12-11. Iowa State came out of the media timeout cutting its deficit to one (15-14), but BYU pressed on to hit 20 with ISU at 17. Down to match point, Iowa State fought it off five times to tie the set 25-25. A Cougar kill followed, but Gonzalez answered with her 10th for another tie. ISU found set point six times after battles of rallies, and sealed the set at 33-31.
SET FOUR
BYU was the first to 10, but Iowa State stood just one point behind. The set was brought to a tie at 12s, but the Cougars would hold the lead of 15-13 at the media timeout. Martin served to an ace to pull within one (18-17), and BYU pressed on to 20 first with ISU at 17.
