AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (13-8, 7-3 Big 12) swept West Virginia (11-9, 4-6 Big 12) by set scores of 25-20, 25-23, 25-22 Friday night, the Cyclones' fifth sweep of the season.
Nayeli Gonzalez, returning for the first time after injury in the Utah match, hit 12 kills tonight to lead the match. Middle blocker Pam McCune also had 10-plus, hitting 10 at .421.
Rachel Van Gorp had 17 digs through the three sets. It was the libero's 20th match this season with double figure digs and 70th of her career.
Freshman setter Ella Florez dialed in a new career high of 34 assists, also totaling seven digs, three blocks and an ace. Fellow freshman Taylor Johnson made her first start and put up a team-leading five blocks.
SET ONE
The Cyclones had an early 5-0 run to take a 5-3 lead, but West Virginia answered with a run of its own to go up 7-5. Gonzalez subbed in soon after and immediately put down two kills to bring the Cyclones ahead 9-8. Iowa State remained up from there, taking the set 25-20. Gonzalez led the set with four kills.
SET TWO
The teams fought through many long rallies as neither team broke away from the other, but WVU was the first to 10 with ISU one behind. After a tie at 11s, ISU went on a run featuring two McCune kills to lead by four at the media timeout. McCune's seventh kill without an error brought ISU in front 17-13, but WVU would fight back to come within one at 20-19 and cause an Iowa State timeout. Out of the break, Gonzalez fired off a no-doubter, and after another tie at 21-21 ISU took over to win the set 25-23.
SET THREE
Back-to-back kills by Johnson tied the third at 3-3, while the Mountaineers were the first to 10 at 10-7. Iowa State would hit a run of five, including back-to-back D'Aaliyah Kemp blocks, making it 12-11 as WVU called for a timeout. ISU led by one at the media timeout thanks to a block by Florez and Johnson, but the Mountaineers flipped the lead at 17-16. ISU took the advantage back on a Florez ace (18-17) but more lead changes followed. McCune then began a run with a kill, following that up with a block, and Kemp snuck in a kill right after to put the Cyclones up 21-19. ISU stayed with the lead from there winning the third 25-22.
