CINCINNATI, Ohio – Iowa State (11-6, 5-1 Big 12) took the win at Cincinnati (8-7, 1-4 Big 12) Sunday by set scores of 25-17, 25-18, 17-25, 25-20.
Mesaiya Bettis showed her versatility and dialed new career highs of 14 kills and nine digs. Bettis also had an ace and two blocks. Bettis led the match while Nayeli Ti'a was close behind with 13 at .281 for the 50th match of her career in double figures. Ti'a came one dig shy of a double-double and also put up two blocks and served to an ace.
Rachel Van Gorp was all over the floor racking up 21 digs, her fifth time this season with 20 or more. Freshman setter Ella Florez had the third double-double of her career with 24 assists and 10 digs, while serving a career-high two aces.
SET ONE
Nayeli Gonzalez picked up where she left off Friday putting down the first kill of the match, while Bettis went back-to-back to retake the early lead at 4-3. The Cyclones continued to roll making it 8-4 as Pam McCune put up a solo wall and Cincinnati called for a timeout. Shortly out of the break, UC took a run of four to pull within one but two Bearcat errors followed to keep ISU with the advantage. A Cyclone run of six then put ISU up 18-11, and ISU would win the opener 25-17. Bettis led the first with seven kills at a clip of .462.
SET TWO
After going down four, Ti'a slammed down four-straight kills to tie the set at 9s. Iowa State would take the lead at 13-12 after yet another Ti'a kill followed by a Macie Lupkes kill and UC error. Two Cyclone kills came next to extend the run to six, reaching the media timeout ahead 15-12. Iowa State hit 20 first (20-15) and pressed on to seal the 2-0 match lead at 25-18 on a Bettis ace.
SET THREE
The third proved to be a close one, but the Bearcats reached 10 first with ISU one point behind. Iowa State won a challenge to make the score 13-11, UC, after a Bettis attack was ruled a kill on a touch call and Cincinnati reached the midpoint of the set up slightly at 15-12. Cincinnati's lead grew to five at 17-12, and the home team remained with the advantage to force a fourth at 25-17.
SET FOUR
After UC went up 2-0, ISU answered with a run of four. Bettis continued adding to her stat line putting up a block and putting the Cyclones up 8-3. UC came back within two to put the scoreboard at 9-7, but Iowa State kept with it to lead at the media timeout 15-11. The host made it close deep into the set at 19-18, and after the Bearcats again came within one at 20-19, ISU won its second challenge after a net violation to reverse the score. Florez then served her second ace, and UC chose to call a timeout after. ISU kept control of the lead, winning the match by a set score of 25-20.
