MANHATTEN, Kan.--Troy Davis made NCAA history for Iowa State, but was upstaged by Mike Lawrence, who exploded for a school-record 252 rushing yards and three touchdowns to lead 14th-ranked Kansas State to a 35-20 win over the Cyclones in a Big 12 game.
In what may have been his final collegiate game, Davis carried 48 times for 225 yards and two touchdowns and became the first player in Division I history with a pair of 2,000-yard rushing seasons.
Iowa State finished 2-9 overall and 1-7 in the Big 12. Davis, a junior, could elect to enter the NFL draft next spring. The Heisman Trophy finalist finished with 2,185 yards and 21 touchdowns this season.
Davis extended his NCAA record for rushing yards in consecutive seasons to 4,195.
Lawrence countered with touchdown runs of 28 yards in the first quarter, two yards in the second and four yards early in the fourth. The junior carried 38 times and broke the Kansas State record of 227 yards set by J.J. Smith in 1994 against Nevada-Las Vegas.
The Wildcats (9-2, 6-2 Big 12 North) were eliminated from any conference title chances with a loss at Colorado last week, but are in contention for a Cotton Bowl berth.
Brian Kavanagh of the Wildcats threw a pair of touchdown passes and was 14-for-20 for 117 yards. He tossed a five-yard TD pass to Kevin Lockett 1:22 into the second quarter and Lawrence added his second score almost nine minutes later for a 21-3 Kansas State advantage. Lockett caught eight passes for 64 yards.
Davis scored on a one-yard run with 2:28 left in the second quarter to cut the lead to 21-10. Kavanagh then found Jimmy Dean for a six-yard touchdown with 20 seconds remaining before halftime.
The only score of the third quarter came when Kavanagh was tackled in the end zone for a safety.
Lawrence's third touchdown made it 35-12 with 10:39 left. Davis went into the end zone from one yard out with 4:45 left and the two-point conversion accounted for the final margin.
