AMES, Iowa (AP) - Marcus Fizer scored 24 points to lead Iowa State to a 79-54 season-opening victory against Simon Fraser on Monday.
The game, while called an exhibition, goes into the win column for Iowa State as Simon Fraser, an NAIA school in British Columbia, competes in a United States-based league.
Fizer staked the Cyclones (1-0) to a 39-33 halftime lead with 13 points. He finished the game with 10 field goals in 12 attempts and five rebounds.
Jamaal Tinsley and Kantrail Horton added 16 and 15 points, respectively , for Iowa State, which shot 50 percent for the game (31-of-62).
Iowa State never trailed in the contest, but saw Simon Fraser battle back from an 11-2 deficit to tie the game at 25-25 with 5:40 left in the first half. Horton then scored eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, during a 12-2 Cyclone run that saw them open up a 37-27 lead with 2:10 remaining in the half.
Simon Fraser (0-4) never got closer than seven points in the second half. The Clan trailed 44-37 less than four minutes into the half before Iowa State put together a 11-4 run to open up a 55-41 lead with 13:12 remaining. The Cyclones led 64-50 with 7:50 left and used a 9-2 spurt to take a commanding 73-52 lead with just more than three minutes to play.
Simon Fraser's Andrew Kwiatkowski led all scorers with 25 points and Richard Anderson scored 14 before fouling out with 12 minutes to play in the second half. Kwiatkowski and Anderson accounted for 17 of the Clan's 24 field goals in the game.
Kwiatkowski was 10-of-13 from the field and was the only member of the team to make any free throws.
