AMES, Iowa -- Darren Davis, whose 1,368 yards rushing in 1999 ranks fourth on the all-time Iowa State football single-season rushing chart and whose 3,763 career yards rushing rank second all-time to his older brother Troy, was honored as the Cyclones' 1999 MVP at ISU's post-season awards banquet at the Starlite Village.
Davis, who finished his career as one of only five tailbacks from a Big 12 school to record three 1,000-yard rushing seasons, also received the Ray Scott Award as the Cyclones' outstanding offensive player. Safety Jeff Waters, who finished the season with a team-high 107 tackles in 1999 and 200 tackles in a pair of seasons as a starter, earned the Al and Dean Knudson Award as the team's outstanding defensive player.
The Durwood "Dury" Moss Award for the team's outstanding newcomer went to Atif Austin, who moved to cornerback from running back last spring and finished the season with 39 tackles and 12 passes broken up. Junior Ryan Sloth of Belmond was given the Jim Doran Award as Iowa State's best special teams player. Deep snapper Jason Lyftogt of Orange City earned the Bill Daily Award as a player who has made a great contribution to the team with little public recognition.
Freshman quarterback Gerrin Scott was named the Cyclones' offensive scout team player of the year. Freshman lineman Jordan Carstens of Panora was named ISU's defensive scout team player of the year. Senior Bill Marsau of Hudson, a three -year starter, including two years starting duty in the Iowa State offensive line, was give the Reuben J. Miller Award as a Cyclone whose conduct on and off the field has brought honor and distinction to the university. Marsau also earned the Consideration Award, presented annually by the team's student trainers and managers to the individual who was most considerate of ISU support staff.
Senior Ryan Gerke and junior Reggie Hayward earned the Arthur Floyd Scott award as Iowa State's top offensive and defensive linemen, respectively. Hayward finished the season with 68 tackles, including a team-high four sacks.
Davis, Gerke, wide receiver Chris Anthony of Bettendorf, linebacker Jesse Beckom and nose guard Ryan Harklau of Humboldt were honored with the Ralph Aulmann Memorial Awards, recognizing their contributions as team captains.
Quarterback Sage Rosenfels of Maquoketa was honored by the Iowa State coaching staff with a special award recognizing his leadership on and off the field in 1999.
The following seniors were honored with special senior awards: fullback DeCarlos Anderson of Waterloo, Beckom, defensive lineman Robert Brannon, wide receiver Michael Brantley, Brcka, wide receiver Damien Groce, Davis, defensive end James Elmore, Gerke, fullback Hez Jackson, defensive back Jarrett Lollis, Marsau, offensive lineman T.J. Tuetken and Waters.
Linebacker Dave Brcka of West Des Moines, who finished his career with 289 career tackles, received Iowa State's academic award. The recipient of an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship from the College Football Foundation and Hall of Fame was one of seven Cyclones honored as first- or second-team academic all-Big 12 Conference selections. The others were safety Dustin Avey of Ames, Marsau, placekicker Mike McKnight of Fort Dodge, safety Adam Runk, Sloth and Rosenfels.
