AMES, Iowa -- Junior Marcus Fizer was named one of the nation's preseason top 50 men's basketball players by the John R. Wooden Award Committee.
A first-team all-Big 12 forward last season, Fizer led the conference in overall scoring with an 18.0 ppg average. The Arcadia, La., native is the first Cyclone to lead the conference in scoring since 1988, when Jeff Grayer ended the season with a Big Eight Conference-best 25.3 ppg average. Fizer enters his junior year with 984 career points, 14 shy of joining 20 other Cyclone standouts in the 1,000-point club.
Six Big 12 men's basketball players were selected by the Wooden Committee based on last year's individual performance and team records. Texas' Chris Mihm and Oklahoma's Eduardo Najera were preseason top 25 candidates, while Fizer was joined by Kansas' Luke Axtell and Eric Chenowith and Oklahoma State's Desmond Mason as preseason top 50 selections.
The Cyclones open the 1999-2000 regular season Friday, Nov. 19 at Drake following exhibition games Wednesday, Nov. 10 vs. Global Sports and Monday, Nov. 15 against Simon Fraser.
