WACO, Texas - The Iowa State volleyball team fell to Baylor, 1-3 Saturday night in the Ferrell Center. The Cyclones were led by Stacy Nicks' 15 kills, but came up short against the Bears dropping their overall record to 2-15 and 0-9 in Big 12 action. The win improves Baylor's season record to 11-7 and evens its conference mark at 5-5.
The Cyclones came on strong in the second game jumping out to a 9-0 lead. ISU got things done at the net, recording five team blocks in the second game. Leading the way offensively for ISU in the second stanza were Nicks and Sarah Rollman, who tallied four and three kills, respectively. Unfortunately for ISU the Bears were able to chip way at the Cyclones' lead and pulled out set two with a score of 15-11.
The third set saw ISU continue with the consistence that they showed early in the second game. The Cyclones fought Baylor throughout the set and came out victorious behind two blocks that gave ISU a 16-14 win. The set was the first game ISU had taken from the Bears since winning in Waco 3-1 in 1997. ISU's Rollman led the surge in the third stanza with nine kills and four digs. Once again the Cyclones performed well at the net collecting six team blocks in the third set alone.
"I was really happy with our performance tonight," ISU head coach Linda Grensing said. "We came out and played with some heart and scrappiness tonight. I think this was a potential break through night for us. We showed a lot of promise, especially in games two and three."
Rollman and Nicks ended the night with 15 kills apiece, while Nicks added a season-high seven blocks. Nicks continues to hit well from the floor ending the night with a .364 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Mandi Harms also had a good night, recording 10 kills and eight digs.
The Cyclones will be back in action Monday, as they will travel to Ankeny, Iowa to face Drake. The nonconference matchup with the Bulldogs will begin at 7 p.m. in the Ankeny High School gym.
