DALLAS - Iowa State basketball earned a Big 12 Conference basketball sweep Wednesday, with Jamaal Tinsley and Angie Welle voted the Preseason Players of the Year by the league's coaches for men's and women's basketball, respectively.
The Iowa State Cyclones were picked to win the 2001 Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball championship in a preseason poll of the league's head coaches and released by the league office Wednesday.
The top three picks were decided by a narrow margin. ISU garnered five first-place votes and had a total of 113 points. Oklahoma was chosen second with 109 points and received three first-place votes. Texas Tech grabbed the third spot with 104 points and received four first-place votes. All three schools tied for the 2000 regular-season title with 13-3 records in conference action.
Iowa State's Angie Welle was chosen the preseason Big 12 Player of the Year. The 6-4 junior center is the league's returning leading scorer and rebounder after averaging 15.4 ppg and 8.6 rpg last season. The 2000 honorable mention Associated Press All-American was a member of the 2000 All-Big 12 Conference second team while leading the nation in field goal percentage at 64.7 percent.
Jamaal Tinsley, Iowa State's senior point guard, was the overwhelming selection for Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, while the Cyclones were fourth on the preseason coaches poll.
Tinsley, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., was a first-team all-Big 12 selection and earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors in 1999-2000 after helping Iowa State to its first conference title since 1945 and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance.
Tinsley averaged 11.0 ppg and broke ISU single-season records in both assists (244) and steals (98) last year, marks previously held by former Cyclone and NBA all-star Jeff Hornacek. Tinsley represented both the Big 12 and the USA Select Team during their respective tours last summer. The USA Select Team competed against the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team prior to its gold medal performance at the Sydney Games.
Tinsley is a preseason All-American in a number of basketball publications and is one of 50 candidates for both the James Naismith and John Wooden Awards, an honor bestowed upon the nation's best collegiate basketball player.
