AMES, Iowa - Iowa State quarterback Sage Rosenfels and wide receiver J.J. Moses, a lethal passing combination in part responsible for a Cyclone offense that ranked third in school history and propelled ISU to its best record and first bowl bid in 22 years, were named as the Cyclones' 2000 co-MVP's at the football team's post-season awards banquet at the Starlite Village Sunday.
Rosenfels, who tallied 2,679 yards of total offense this fall, threw for 2,298 yards, including 53 passes to Moses, whose reception total and 775 receiving yards rank sixth on the all-time ISU single-season list. Rosenfels, a Maquoketa native, received the Ray Scott Award as the team's outstanding offensive player. Moses, a Waterloo native, earned the Consideration Award, presented annually by the team's student trainers and managers to the individual who was most considerate of ISU support staff. Defensive tackle James Reed, who finished his career ranking second all-time among Cyclone down linemen with 333 tackles, earned the Al and Dean Knudson Award as the team's outstanding defensive player.
The Durwood "Dury" Moss Award for the team's outstanding newcomer went to offensive guard Lorenzo White, the junior college transfer who started 11 games in a line that allowed only seven sacks all season. Carl Gomez, the punter who ranks sixth in school history with an average of 39.9 yards per attempt but also took over place-kicking duties in midseason and made 7-of-8 field goal attempts, was given the Jim Doran Award as Iowa State's best special teams player. Defensive backs Ryan Sloth of Belmond and Doug Densmore, both special teams standouts, earned the Bill Daily Award as players who has made a great contribution to the team with little public recognition.
Freshman quarterback Eric Perry was named the Cyclones' offensive scout team player of the year. Freshman linebacker Brett Kellogg of Cedar Rapids was named ISU's defensive scout team player of the year. Senior wide receiver Chris Anthony of Bettendorf, a four-year starter who ranks fifth in school history with 114 career receptions, was give the Reuben J. Miller Award as a Cyclone whose conduct on and off the field has brought honor and distinction to the University.
All-American center Ben Bruns of Denver and first-team all-Big 12 defensive end Reggie Hayward earned the Arthur Floyd Scott award as Iowa State's top offensive and defensive linemen, respectively. Hayward was the team's top tackler with 90 stops, including a team-high 10 tackles for loss and seven sacks.
Rosenfels, Anthony, Hayward and nose guard Ryan Harklau of Humboldt were honored with the Ralph Aulmann Memorial Awards, recognizing their contributions as team captains.
Offensive linemen Ben Beaudet and Marcel Howard of Davenport were honored by the Iowa State coaching staff with a special award recognizing their leadership and positive team contributions on and off the field in 2000.
The following seniors were honored with special senior awards: cornerback Breon Ansley, Anthony, safety Dustin Avey of Ames, Beaudet, offensive lineman Brent Braaksma of Sheldon, Bruns, Densmore, Gomez, Harklau, Hayward, defensive back Nick Hein of Monticello, linebacker Stevie Johnson, offensive lineman Andy Kelley of Knoxville, linebacker Jedd Moore of Waterloo, cornerback Jamarcus Powers, Reed, offensive lineman Scott Rickard, Rosenfels, Sloth, offensive lineman Andy Stensrud of Lake Mills, defensive lineman Nigel Tharpe, linebacker Ab Turner, linebacker Derrick Walker and linebacker Eric Weiford of Oelwein.
Fifteen Cyclones were honored for earning academic all-Big 12 honors. Avey, who has already earned his bachelor's degree and is now taking graduate business courses, was honored as a CoSIDA academic all-district honoree and a first-team all-Big 12 selection. The other first-teamers were: defensive lineman Jordan Carstens (agricultural business), offensive lineman Scott Davis (statistics), Hein (agricultural business), place-kicker Mike McKnight (exercise and sport science), Rosenfels (marketing), safety Adam Runk (management information systems), Sloth (exercise and sport science) and Weiford (biology). The second-team academic all-Big 12 honorees were: Bruns (construction engineering), wide receiver Craig Campbell (exercise and sport science), wide receiver Lane Danielsen of Grundy Center (liberal arts and sciences), Howard (biology) and offensive lineman Bob Montgomery (biology).
