AMES, Iowa - Kantrail Horton scored 10 of his career-high 21 points to key a 20-0 run that started the second half and sent No. 25 Iowa State to an 89-74 victory over Tennessee Tech on Tuesday night.
Iowa State (6-0), which moved into the Top 25 on Monday, trailed by 18 points before rallying behind Horton and Jamaal Tinsley to win its 25th straight home game. Tennessee Tech (2-4), playing its fifth road game, missed its first 11 shots of the second half and never recovered.
Tinsley scored 16 of his 17 points in the second half, making six straight shots after missing his first seven. Paul Shirley had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Tyray Pearson 13 points for the Cyclones, who shot 60.6 percent (20-of-33) in the second half.
Leigh Gayden led Tennessee Tech with 17 points and Jason Harrell scored 13, only two in the second half.
Horton, whose previous best was 20 points against Iowa last season, hit a 3-pointer just before halftime to leave Iowa State trailing 49-35. The 6-foot-1 senior started the second half with a 3 from the left corner and the Cyclones took off.
Horton hit another 3 and scored on two driving layups and Tinsley scored twice on drives as Iowa State opened a 55-49 lead. Tennessee Tech did not score in the second half until Brent Jolly's 3-pointer at the 13:38 mark.
After Tennessee Tech cut the lead to 57-54 on Rusty Strange's turnaround shot, Tinsley scored nine points on a variety of spinning, juking moves to lead a 14-2 run that made it 71-56.
The Golden Eagles did not get closer than 12 after that. They were 7-for-16 on 3-pointers in the first half, just 2-of-15 in the second.
Tennessee Tech never trailed in the first half and went on a 19-6 run to open a 29-15 lead. Harrell started it with a layup and later hit consecutive 3-pointers, the second from NBA range.
The lead grew to 38-20 when Jolly got fouled on a 3-point shot and made all three free throws. Iowa State then went inside to Shirley for three straight baskets and Horton followed with a 3, cutting the lead to 38-29 and getting the crowd into the game.
The Golden Eagles quickly silenced the fans by making three 3-pointers in 68 seconds - two by Gayden and the other by Harrell - to go up 49-32. Horton's 3-pointer gave Iowa State a lift going into the locker room and the Cyclones were off and running when they came back out.
