DALLAS - Iowa State junior Marcus Fizer played a major role in two conference wins last week. The forward averaged 25.5 points and 10.5 rebounds and shot 76.9 percent from the field for the week and is the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week. Texas A&M freshman Bernard King scored a Big 12 freshman record 34 points in the Aggies' win against Colorado. The guard's points also broke the school freshman mark as he has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week. Both honors are chosen by a panel of media who cover Big 12 men's basketball.
Fizer opened the week tying a season high with 28 points in the 72-62 win at Missouri. It marked the second straight game the junior scored 28 as he had that many against Kansas State Feb. 2. The Arcadia, La., native was 11-of-18 (.611) from the field at Missouri and also pulled down 12 rebounds notching his sixth double-double of the season. Fizer answered that by shooting a career best 9-for-10 in scoring 23 points in the 87-65 win against Nebraska. He made his first seven shots, including one three-pointer, against the Huskers and only played 27 minutes for the game. A first-team All-Big 12 selection last year, Fizer is on pace to lead the Big 12 in scoring for the second straight season, currently averaging 21.1 points per game. Last year he led the league with an 18.0 scoring average.
With 34 points, King broke the Big 12 freshman record of 32 points held by current Kansas guard Luke Axtell versus Liberty when he was at Texas during the 1997-98 season. King's points also broke the school freshman record of 33 points by the late Vernon Smith against Southwestern Louisiana during the 1997-78 season. King was 10-of-19 from the field against Colorado including 4-of-7 from three-point range to go along with six rebounds, four assists and three steals. He was also solid from the free throw line going 10-for-11. King has made 56 three-pointers this season, to break the school freshman season record and to rank in the Big 12. King leads the Big 12 freshman class with a 16.3 scoring average which ranks seventh overall.
