DALLAS - Iowa State junior Marcus Fizer came up big in allowing the Cyclones to stand in first place in the Big 12 men's basketball standings. The forward scored a career-high 35 points in the 89-77 win against No. 14 Texas, posted 29 points in the 72-61 victory versus No. 10 Oklahoma State and is the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week. Kansas freshman Nick Collison had some big numbers in two victories last week. The forward blocked six shots in an 83-58 win at Nebraska then scored 19 points in the 80-70 victory against Baylor and is the Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week. Both honors are chosen by a panel of media who cover Big 12 men's basketball.
Fizer averaged 32 points in two Iowa State wins, which puts the Cyclones (24-4, 12-2) in a one-game lead heading into the final week of the 2000 Big 12 race. Against Texas Fizer added nine rebounds to go along with his career high 35 points. The Arcadia, La., native was 13-for-25 (.520) from the field for the game including 2-for-2 from three-point range and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. His 13 field goals were a personal best as were his five assists against the Longhorns. Fizer matched his field goal best by going 13-for-29 in scoring 29 points versus Oklahoma State. He went 2-for-3 from three-point range against the Cowboys while going a combined 4-for-5 (.800) for the week. A first-team All-Big 12 selection last year, Fizer leads the Big 12 with a 22 scoring average. Fizer has scored 94 points, averaging 31.3 points over his last three games, and as of last week's NCAA statistics is the only Division I player to rank in the top 12 in field goal percentage (eighth) and scoring (12th).
Collison's six blocks at Nebraska were the most by a Kansas freshman in the Roy Williams era to go along with 12 points. Against Baylor the Iowa Falls, Iowa, forward went 9-for-14 (.643) from the field in leading the Jayhawks in scoring with 19 points. For the week Collison averaged 15.5 points and was 14-of-25 (.560) from the field. On the season he is averaging 10.6 points per game, 30th in the league, and his 6.8 rebounds average rank 15th in the Big 12. He and junior Kenny Gregory are the only two Jayhawks to start every game this season. Collison won the honor in a split vote over Oklahoma freshman Hollis Price and Iowa State junior Jamaal Tinsley.
