AMES, Iowa - Iowa State junior Marcus Fizer was one of the top five votegetters for the 2000 John R. Wooden All-America team, which was announced today. Fizer has been invited to Los Angeles for the April 7 presentation of the 2000 John R. Wooden Award, but the identity of the other four individuals who were selected was not released. The presentation of the Wooden Award Trophy to the Player of the Year will be made as part of a live one-hour special show, broadcast on Fox Sports Net at 6 p.m. (central) that day.
Iowa State's first consensus All-American, Fizer led the Cyclones to a school-record 32 wins and its first NCAA Tournament Elite Eight berth since 1944. The Arcadia, La., native posted a Big 12 Conference-best 22.8 points-per-game scoring average, leading the league in scoring for the second consecutive season. The first-team all-Big 12 forward helped the Cyclones clinch their first conference regular-season crown in 55 years. Fizer earned most outstanding player award at the Big 12 Conference Tournament, as ISU claimed its second postseason title in school history. He set Iowa State's single-season scoring record with 844 points and ranks fifth on the school's career scoring chart with 1,830 points in 97 games. Fizer is ISU's first-ever Wooden All-American since the award was created in 1976.
Balloting by 1,047 members of the media and college basketball experts was conducted over the past three weeks. Voters selected 10 players from the 22 athletes listed on the ballot, and ranked them from 1 to 10. Voters were asked to take into account performance during the regular season and postseason, as well as a player's character and academic performance. All players on the ballot were certified by their schools as maintaining at least a 2.0 grade-point average at their current school.
The black tie 24th-annual John R. Wooden Award Presentation Gala will be held at 9:30 p.m. (central) on April 7 at the Biltmore Hotel following the nationally televised announcement of the Wooden Award winner. In addition to honoring the Wooden All-America team, the second-annual "Legends of Coaching" Award will be presented to Duke's Mike Krzyzewski. Tickets are $150 and may be obtained by calling The Los Angeles Athletic Club at (213) 630-5255.
