AMES, Iowa - Reserves Shane Power and Tyray Pearson each scored 14 points as No. 23 Iowa State got strong play from its bench in beating Illinois-Chicago 95-44 Tuesday night for the best start in school history.
Paul Shirley added eight points and a career-high 15 rebounds for Iowa State (12-1), which took control after an angry coach Larry Eustachy called a timeout only 3:49 into the game.
The Cyclones responded with a 20-2 run and Illinois-Chicago (6-7) never got back in it as Iowa State won for the 28th straight time at home, the second-longest streak in the nation.
Jake Sullivan and Kantrail Horton each scored 13 points for Iowa State. Jonathan Schneiderman led Illinois-Chicago with 11.
Jamaal Tinsley, Iowa State's preseason All-American guard, started and played 25 minutes after being ticketed on New Year's Eve for driving without a license and lying to a police officer following a minor traffic accident.
He finished with four points, seven rebounds and six assists.
It was 2-2 when Eustachy called time at the 16:11 mark and chewed out Sullivan for fumbling a pass out of bounds. At that point, Iowa State was 1-for-4 with four turnovers and the fans were growing restless.
Moments later, after Illinois-Chicago took a 4-2 lead, the Cyclones got it going and scored the next 11 points. A basket by Illinois-Chicago's Jordan Kardos interrupted the run, but only temporarily.
Power made consecutive 3-pointers and Horton added another 3 to make it 22-6. A 7-0 spurt stretched the lead to 33-13, and the Cyclones' 44-18 halftime lead was their biggest of the season.
Iowa State's reserves got into the game early and scored 19 of the team's first 33 points. At one point, Eustachy had four reserves and Sullivan on the floor and Iowa State still added to its lead.
Illinois-Chicago shot just 24.3 percent (17-of-70) and did not have an assist for the first 18 1/2 minutes. Iowa State outrebounded the Flames 60-32.
Tinsley had two baskets and two assists during a 3-minute stretch when the lead grew to 67-29. With Iowa State's reserves playing, the lead kept growing and the final margin was the Cyclones' biggest of the game.
Shirley, a 6-foot-10 senior, topped his previous best of 12 rebounds, a figure he achieved twice. He had 15 rebounds before four minutes had elapsed in the second half - two more than Illinois-Chicago had as a team at that point.
