KANSAS CITY - Iowa State senior Jamaal Tinsley, freshman Jake Sullivan and head coach Larry Eustachy highlight the 2000-01 Coaches' All-Big 12 Team and "of the year" honors the league office announced from the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament Wednesday, March 7.
Tinsley is the Big 12 Player of the Year receiving every first-place vote possible by the league mentors as coaches were not allowed to vote for their own player or themselves in the process. Tinsley was one of the main forces in Iowa State's second straight conference championship in men's basketball. The Brooklyn, N.Y., guard was the 1999-00 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and is 12th in Big 12 scoring with a 14.7 average. Tinsley is second in the league in steals at 2.5 and fourth in assists at 6.1.
In what is considered one of the top freshmen classes in the five-year history of the Big 12, Iowa State's Jake Sullivan is the Big 12 Freshman of the Year. A guard from Oakdale, Minn., Sullivan led the conference freshmen class in scoring with a 11.6 average which ranks 27th in the Big 12. Sullivan is fourth in the league in three-point shooting percentage at .457 and his 2.0 treys made per game are 10th.
The Coaches' Big 12 Newcomer of the Year is Oklahoma State guard Maurice Baker. The 6-1 Granite City, Ill., junior transfer from Dixie (Utah) College is second in the Big 12 in scoring with a 19.7 average. Baker also ranks among the league leaders in rebounding (17th at 6.7), field goal percentage (11th at .517), three-point field goal percentage (13th at .382), assists (8th at 4.3), steals (4th at 2.5), three-point field goals made (9th at 2.0). He also recorded only the third triple double in Big 12 history this season when he had 19 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists against Texas-San Antonio. Tinsley last season and Brian Skinner of Baylor in 1997 had the other triple doubles.
In his third season at Iowa State, head coach Larry Eustachy has guided the Cyclones to a 25-4, 13-3 in Big 12 play. Last season's Associated Press and Big 12 Coach of the Year, Eustachy has guided ISU to a combined 57-9 record over the last two years. Iowa State became the second league school to repeat as Big 12 champion as Kansas did it in 1997 and 1998. Eustachy is one of three coaches among the 20 nominated for the Naismith National Coach of the Year honors for 2000-01. He joins Oklahoma's Kelvin Sampson and Kansas' Roy Williams on the national honor list. In addition to his two Big 12 Coach of the Year honors, Eustachy was also the Big West Conference Coach of the Year when he was at Utah State following the 1997-98 season.
Joining Tinsley and Baker on the 2000-01 Coaches' All-Big 12 first team is Baylor forward Terry Black, Missouri forward Kareem Rush, and Kansas forward Nick Collison. Black leads the Big 12 in rebounding with an 8.4 average, while Rush is the league leader in scoring at 21.0. Collison is fourth in field goal percentage at .598 and his 13.8 scoring average is 17th.
