AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State Volleyball team opened the 2001 season with a 3-0 victory versus Western Illinois, Friday night in Hilton Coliseum. Junior Mandi Harms led the Cyclone charge, finishing with a team-high 12 kills. Freshman Brittany Dalager also played a major role in helping ISU open the season 1-0 as she collected nine kills and seven digs in her first collegiate match. Tonight's contest was also the season opener for WIU, who falls to 0-1.
In game one Iowa State got off to a slow start as Western Illinois took an early lead. WIU's Sallie Bowles did most of the damage, finishing the opening set with four kills and three digs. Harms brought the Cyclones back and led the squad to a hard fought 30-28 first set win. Harms finished with six kills, but hit just .059 from the floor.
ISU got off to good start in set two and never looked back, winning 30-18 to take a 2-0 advantage to the lockerroom. Pruess and Dalager combined for 10 kills on 10 attempts to pace Iowa State. ISU hit an impressive .462 from the floor as a team in game two.
Set three was more of the same as Iowa State took an early lead and held on to claim the set and match with a 30-18 third set win. Steph Suntken led the way as she collected three of her five kills in the final game. Setter Sara Stribe collect 33 assists on the night and chipped in two kills.
The Cyclones will take the floor for their second match of the Iowa State Heritage Classic, Saturday night at 7 p.m. vs. Drake. Western Illinois faces off with Drake at noon.
