AMES, Iowa - Iowa State senior forward Tyray Pearson was named Phillips 66 Men's Basketball Big 12 Player of the Week after averaging 29.0 ppg and 10.5 rpg in ISU's two games during the week. Pearson was a one-man wrecking crew in the paint, helping ISU upset No. 17 Missouri (71-67) and aiding ISU's inspired effort in its 69-66 loss to No. 6 Oklahoma State.
Pearson, who played all 40 minutes in both games, single-handedly took over the game against the Tigers, recording a then-career-high 28 points. Pearson, who was 13-for-23 from the floor vs. MU, scored ISU's last 11 points of the first half to keep the Cyclones at close range (MU, 29-26). Pearson added 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the second half, propelling the Cyclones to their first victory over a ranked opponent this season. Pearson was also ISU's catalyst on the boards, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds (6 offensive, 6 defensive), giving him his fourth double-double of the season. He also tied a career-high with three steals and had two blocks.
Just three days later, Pearson eclipsed his career high by posting 30 points vs. No. 6 Oklahoma State. Pearson was ISU's first 30-point scorer since Martin Rancik scored 30 against Drake (Dec. 17, 2000). Pearson posted 16 of his 30 points in the first half on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor and a 4-for-4 effort at the foul line. It was the second time this season that the senior had 16 points at the half (Boston College). Pearson, who finished the game going 10-for-20 from the floor and 10-for-13 at the foul line, ended the OSU game with a game-high nine rebounds.
Pearson has scored over 20 points in 11 of his last 15 games and has led the Cyclones in scoring in 10 of the last 12 contests. Against Big 12 competition, Pearson has a league-best 26.7 ppg average, scoring 22 vs. Baylor, 28 vs. Missouri and 30 vs. Oklahoma State. He currently is shooting 54.2 percent (32-59) from the floor and averaging 8.3 rpg in the Big 12.
