AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Steve Loney has accepted a position as offensive line coach with the NFL's Minnesota Vikings. Loney joins the staff of new Vikings head coach Mike Tice.
"My relationship with Dan McCarney and Iowa State University made this a tough decision," Loney said. "Dan made it possible for me to return to Iowa State and be a part of one of the biggest reversals of fortune in college football. I can't say enough about Dan McCarney. He is one of the best coaches in college football. Dan not only turned around the Cyclone football program, he sustained that success last season. It is difficult to leave when the future here is so bright. This was a special opportunity for me to work in the National Football League with a head coach I know and respect."
Loney's offenses were key part of Iowa State's back-to-back bowl seasons. The Cyclones 2000 Insight.com Bowl unit averaged 424.4 yards per game, the third-best total in school history. His balanced ISU offensive attacks produced a 1,000-yard rusher and 2,000-yard passer in each of the last two seasons. Iowa State is one of three schools nationally to boast a 1,000-yard rusher in each of the last seven seasons.
"I think this demonstrates without a doubt what people think of our coaching staff nationally," McCarney said. "Steve Loney has made major contributions here when we started building this program from the ground up and when we were bowl-bound. When you have the kind of success we have experienced at Iowa State, people in the know at all levels of the game of football will take a long look at what you have done, how you have done it and the staff that made it possible for you to get there. Steve is a great personal friend and we are confident his success will continue in the National Football League."
Loney is a 1974 graduate of Iowa State who was a member of Johnny Major's 1971 Sun Bowl and 1972 Liberty Bowl teams. The Marshalltown native joined McCarney's staff in 1995 before taking a position as offensive coordinator at Minnesota for the 1998 and 1999 seasons. Loney rejoined McCarney's staff before the 2000 season. He previously served as an offensive line coach for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.
