AMES, Iowa - Mandi Harms had 19 kills and Brittany Dalager added 12, but it wasn't enough as Iowa State fell to Colorado in four games (3-1) in Wednesday night volleyball action in Hilton Coliseum. Dalager was also the defensive leader for the Cyclones with 16 digs. With her 12 kills and 16 digs, she had her seventh double-double of the season and the 14th for her career. Dana Koziol added 12 kills for the Cyclone cause.
The loss moves the Cyclones overall recorded to 9-13 and 0-10 in league play. Colorado's Monique Gerlach pounded 17 kills on the night to help the Buffaloes improve to 11-9 overall and to 5-5 in Big 12 action.
The two teams played a pretty even match, with CU outhitting the Cyclones just .189 to .173. Colorado committed 34 hitting errors on 68 attacks, while the Cyclones had 57 kills and 28 errors.
ISU's Sara Stribe had five kills, eight digs and 40 assists to help the Cyclones on the evening. Stribe now has 2,613 assists, which places her third on ISU's all-time career list.
The Cyclones were hitting on all cylinders in game one, hitting .268 from the floor compared to CU's .125. Harms had seven kills and Dalager added five kills. The Cyclones had 18 kills to Colorado's 16 and won game won game one, 30-28.
"I thought we did a good job of following our game plan in game one," Head Coach Linda Crum said. "I thought we played aggressively and very competitively and really did some good things."
In game two, the Buffaloes got back on track, hitting .178 from the floor, while holding the Cyclones to .050 hitting from the floor. Colorado had 16 kills to ISU's 11 and defeated Iowa State in game two, 30-21. Harms added four kills and Dalager added three. Koziol had five digs in game two.
Game three was one of the more competitive games of the night. Colorado pounded 18 kills to ISU's 14 and hit .157 to the Cyclones' .102. Defensively, the two teams were pretty even, with Colorado having 21 digs to Iowa State's 20. Harms and Dalager were again the team leaders in the game with four and six kills, respectively. But Colorado edged Iowa State, 31-29.
In game four, Colorado hit .295 to Iowa State's .282 and the Buffaloes outdug the Cyclones, 21-11, and won game four, 30-20 and the match, 3-1.
Iowa State won the blocking edge, 24-13, with freshman Katie Kruenegel having seven block assists and Renae Pruess and Harms having four each.
"For the most part, I'm proud of how we played tonight," Crum said. "I thought our serving was good. It put Colorado in some tough spots tonight. Game three was the turning point, I thought. That's where we lost momentum going into game four. But we will continue to improve."
Iowa State will travel to Waco, Texas, to take on Baylor on Saturday, Oct. 26. First serve will be at 7 p.m. Iowa State lost to Baylor, 3-1, earlier this season.
