DALLAS - Seven Iowa State players were named Tuesday to the 2002 Football Academic All-Big 12 first team by the league office. Four Cyclones made the second team.
Iowa State junior defensive tackle Jordan Carstens (agricultural business) earned first-team all-league honors for the third straight season. He was joined on the first team by offensive lineman Bob Montgomery (exercise and sports science), who earned all-academic honors for the second straight season. The other ISU first-teamers were wide receiver Jack Whitver (Graduate business), fullback Matt Grosserode (business), defensive back Ellis Hobbs (graphic design) and linebackers Boyd Viers (biology) and Jamar Buchanan (mechanical engineering).
Iowa State second-teamers were wide receiver Jesse Arnold (economics), wide receiver Lane Danielson (exercise and sports science), punt returner Todd Miller (exercise and sports science) and placekicker/punter Tony Yelk (advertising).
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the first-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
