BOULDER, Colo. - Mandi Harms and Brittany Dalager had 10 kills each and Katie Kruenegel and Ashlie McWee added six each, but it wasn't enough as Colorado defeated Iowa State in three games (3-0) Saturday night in the Coors Events Center. Senior setter Sara Stribe had 31 assists and a team-high 13 digs to lead the Cyclone cause on the night.
The loss drops Iowa State to 10-17 overall and 1-14 in league play. Colorado's Monique Gerlach had 12 kills and eight digs to lead the Buffaloes. Colorado improved to 13-12 overall and to 7-8 in the Big 12.
Colorado hit a high .244 from the floor for the match, while holding Iowa State to .079. CU had 47 kills to ISU's 37 and 57 digs to the Cyclones' 49.
Freshmen Katie Kruenegel and Ashlie McWee each had six kills, while junior Renae Pruess added three kills.
In game one, the Cyclones and the Buffaloes played a pretty even game, with neither team taking a big lead. Colorado took an early 5-2 lead before a kill by Dalager netted the Cyclones a point. ISU tied the score at five with a big block by McWee and Dalager. The score would remain close throughout the early part of the game, until CU began to pull away. Iowa State pulled to within three, 14-11, on a block by Dalager and Kruenegel, but CU defeated the Cyclones, 30-21. ISU had 12 kills on 46 attempts, while CU had 19 kills. Dalager, Pruess and Kruenegel all had three kills for Iowa State.
In game two, Colorado's offense and defense was clicking as it held Iowa State to .073 hitting and just 10 kills on 41 attempts. The Buffaloes hit .234 from the floor, including 18 kills and 23 digs. The Cyclones pulled within 14-11 midway through the match, but CU was hitting on all cylinders and defeated ISU, 30-20, to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room. Harms had five kills and McWee added three in game two.
Game three was more of the same as Iowa State couldn't seem to find its offense, although they had 15 kills to Colorado's 10. CU hit a sizzling .250 from the floor to ISU's .077, which proved to be the difference in the game. ISU also had more digs, 12-10. ISU pulled to 11-13 at one point in the game, but couldn't sustain its offense and Colorado won the game, 30-19, and the match, 3-0. Dalager had six kills and seven digs for the Cyclone cause, while Harms added four kills.
Iowa State continues on the road next week as it travels to Lincoln, Neb., to take on No. 4 Nebraska on Wednesday, Nov. 13. First serve is set for 7 p.m. The Cornhuskers defeated Iowa State in three games on Oct. 12.
