DALLAS - Iowa State junior Jackson Vroman, who averaged 11.6 ppg and 11.3 rpg in three games last week, was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week, announced today by the Big 12 Conference.
Vroman was instrumental in helping ISU go 2-1 during the week, including a 73-69 victory at Iowa that ended ISU's 11-game road losing streak. The Bountiful, Utah, center recorded his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 boards against Boston College and then was the difference-maker in the Iowa win. With 6:27 left in the game, Vroman took over, scoring 11 of his 13 points and 11 of ISU's final 19 points. Vroman was 4-for-5 from the floor during the final run and converted a pair of conventional three-point plays, including the game-winner with :20 seconds left.
Vroman then followed that performance with eight points and a career-high 15 boards against Savannah State. Vroman, who only played 20 minutes against Savannah State, had 13 boards on the defensive glass. Vroman is the first ISU player to be named Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week since Jake Sullivan earned the honor during the 2000-01 season. The honor is chosen by a media panel.
