Iowa State Extends McCarney Contract

AMES, Iowa -- The current contract of Iowa State head football coach Dan McCarney has been extended an additional two years, through the 2006 season, ISU athletics director Bruce Van De Velde announced Friday. McCarney has led the Cyclones to back-to-back bowl game appearances. Iowa State is one of 27 NCAA Division I-A football teams to post at least 16 wins over the past two seasons. The Cyclones have posted back-to-back winning campaigns for the first time in 23 years, going 9-3 in 2000 and 7-5 in 2001.
"This extension is an affirmation of all that Dan McCarney has accomplished over the past two seasons," Van De Velde said. "It sends a message to future student-athletes that we are working to ensure the long term success of our football program after two memorable seasons."
The Cyclones' nine wins in 2000 marked ISU's highest single-season victory total in 94 years. Iowa State, which beat Pittsburgh in the 2000 Insight.com Bowl, was ranked 25th on the final AP poll that season, its first national ranking since 1981. Led by Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year Seneca Wallace, Iowa State returned to post-season play in 2001, earning a spot in the Independence Bowl.
"I fully appreciate the opportunity I have here at Iowa State University," McCarney said. "We are working hard to build on our success and this will help us achieve those goals."
Iowa State opens the 2002 season in the Eddie Robinson Classic Aug. 24 against Florida State in Kansas City, Mo.
