Iowa State's (12-19, 4-12) Young Squad Makes Steady Improvement
Iowa State (12-19, 4-12) had an almost impossible task before the 2001-02 season ever started in replacing four senior starters from the 2000-01 squad that captured ISU's head coach Larry Eustachy's second-straight Big 12 regular-season title...all four departed seniors are currently playing professional basketball, including the 27th pick in the 2001 NBA draft and first-team All-American, rookie Indiana Pacer star Jamaal Tinsley...adding more discomfort was that the Cyclones only had one senior on the roster in Tyray Pearson...Eustachy got the most out of his young and inexperienced team, suffering plenty of growing pains along the way...ISU played primarily a seven-man rotation that featured one senior, one junior, three sophomores and two freshmen...this combination equaled to a fluctuation of intensity and effort...despite the 12-19 record and a schedule that featured nine top-25 opponents, ISU was rarely blown out and kept most of the games close until the final minutes, where ISU's inexperience and lack of depth was evident...in six of ISU's 12 conference losses, ISU either had the lead, was tied or was down two points with less than a minute remaining in the game...overall, only seven of the Cyclones' 19 losses were over 10 points and nine defeats were by five points or less...eight times during the year, ISU had a chance to tie or win the game with the last possession, falling short seven of the eight games...highlights on the season included a 71-67 win over No. 17 and NCAA-bound Missouri in Hilton Coliseum that tied a Big 12 Conference record for consecutive conference games won at home...the MU win gave the Cyclones their 19th-straight conference victory at home, dating back to the 1998-99 season, tying Kansas for the Big 12 record for most consecutive conference wins at home...ISU also continued to build on its school-record homecourt winning streak at the start of the season...the Cyclones won their first three games in Hilton to increase their skein to 39, the second-best active streak in the nation at the time...former ISU assistant Steve Barnes' San Jose State Spartans ended ISU's dominance at home, defeating ISU, 64-62 on Dec. 1...ISU's close losses piled up in the early part of the Big 12 season, as the Cyclones began the conference slate with an 1-9 mark...ISU rebounded to win three (Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas State) of its last six league games to finish the conference season at 4-12...statistically speaking, the Cyclones were outstanding at the free-throw, making 74.8 percent as a team to rank second in the Big 12 Conference and 22nd nationally...the clip is the fourth-best single-season free-throw percentage in school history...the squad also continued to live by Eustachy's trademark of tough man-to-man defense and rebounding...ISU allowed 69.7 ppg to rank third in the conference and had a +3.7 rebounding margin.

Head Coach Larry Eustachy
Iowa State head coach Larry Eustachy, now in his fourth season at ISU, has already carved his name onto a long list of coaching greats at Iowa State and the Big 12 Conference...the 2000 and 2001 Big 12 Coach of the Year is the director of a rejuvenated ISU basketball program that won back-to-back Big 12 regular-season championship titles in 2000 and 2001...included in that brilliant two-year span was: the third-best two-year NCAA Division I winning percentage, two NCAA tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight berth in 2000, a 2000 Big 12 Tournament Championship, two first-team All-Americans and Big 12 Players of the Year (Marcus Fizer and Jamaal Tinsley) and the two best single season win totals in ISU basketball history (32 and 25)...Eustachy's national success is not a recent phenomenon...the 2000 AP National Coach of the Year has compiled a 243-131 mark at Idaho, Utah State and Iowa State...what is more impressive is his habit of winning conference titles...Eustachy has captured league crowns in six of his 11 years as a head coach, earning conference coach of the year honors four times.

Iowa State Was Powered By Its Big Three (Pearson, Sullivan & Power)
Iowa State's offensive and defensive strength was engineered by its Big Three: Tyray Pearson, Jake Sullivan and Shane Power...the senior and two sophomores were responsible for 67.1 percent of the team's scoring, as the trio were the only Cyclones to average double-digits in scoring (Pearson, 18.7, Sullivan, 16.0, Power, 13.6)...Pearson was exceptionally effective in his senior campaign, ranking fourth in the conference in scoring and eighth in rebounding (7.8)...the Hammond, Ind., native made the most out of his first season as a starter, scoring over 20 points 18 times throughout the season...Pearson, who was an USBWA all-District VI pick and a second-team all-Big 12 selection, became only the 13th Cyclone in school history to score over 30 points twice against a league opponent...Pearson posted 30 points vs. Oklahoma State and 32 against Nebraska...Pearson was ISU's only Big 12 Player of the Week (Jan. 14) recipient during the season, averaging 29.0 ppg and 10.5 rpg in his two games (Missouri and Oklahoma) that week...Sullivan continued to be one of the most efficient marksmen from downtown in his sophomore season...the 2001 Big 12 Freshman of the Year improved his scoring average to 16.0 ppg while earning third-team all-Big 12 honors by the league's coaches...Sullivan shot an impressive 47.2 percent (60-127) from three-point range, ranking second in the conference and third nationally...the Oakdale, Minn., native was also deadeye at the charity stripe, becoming the first Cyclone in school history to shoot 90 percent or above in a single-season from the foul line...Sullivan made 90 percent (117-130) of his foul shots, ranking No. 2 in the Big 12 and fifth nationally...Sullivan, who tallied a career-high 27 points against Kansas and Colorado, drilled 60 treys on the year, tying for the seventh-best single-season total in school history...while Pearson and Sullivan were Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside, Power was Mr. Versatile...Power's durability and versatility showed up in about every stat line of an ISU box score, helping the sophomore earn honorable mention all-Big 12 honors...Power was third on the team in scoring (13.6 ppg), third in rebounding (4.1 rpg), first in steals (37), second in three-pointers (23) and second in assists (73) while guarding the opponents top perimeter scoring threat...Power was the only Cyclone to start every game, averaging 37.5 mpg while logging a team-high 11 complete games...his 11 40-minute contests ties for second on the ISU single-season complete games played list...Power finished the season strongly, averaging 15.3 ppg and shooting 51.7 percent (45-87) in his last eight games.
Bynum, Homan And Morgan Emerge
Three key players (Omar Bynum, Jared Homan and Ricky Morgan) stepped up their performances as the season progressed...Bynum, a 6-7 forward from Omaha, Neb., started 22 games during the season, including the final 14 games...Bynum was second on the team in rebounding (6.7 rpg) and averaged 7.2 ppg...the junior led ISU in rebounding 12 times and had a team-high seven double-digit rebounding efforts...in his last seven games, Bynum averaged 12.6 ppg and shot 70.1 percent (36-51) from the field...included in those games was Bynum's career-high 19 points against Nebraska and his last-second layup that helped ISU defeat Kansas State (Feb. 23)...no Cyclone made more improvement from the first day of practice to the end of the season than true freshman Jared Homan...Homan, a native of Remsen, Iowa, played quality minutes in the post, starting nine games while averaging 16.6 mpg...though his 3.6 ppg and 3.4 rpg averages don't stand out, his energy and toughness off the bench injected life into the Cyclones...Homan's speciality was blocking shots, leading ISU with 40 swats, which broke the Cyclone freshman blocked shot record...his 40 blocks is the fifth-best blocked shot total for a Big 12 freshman and the seventh-best single-season total in ISU history...Homan, who tallied a career-high four blocks three times, registered a block in 19 of the last 20 games and averaged 6.1 ppg and 4.0 rpg in the last seven games...true freshman Ricky Morgan also displayed much improvement throughout the season...Morgan, a point guard from Pontiac, Mich., had the daunting task of replacing All-American and 2001 Big 12 Player of the Year Jamaal Tinsley at the point...by season's end, Morgan was much more comfortable leading the offense, averaging 5.3 apg in his last eight starts...Morgan averaged 2.6 ppg and 3.1 apg on the season, dishing out a team-high 91 dimes, tying for third on the ISU freshman assist chart.
ISU Quick Facts
Pearson Paces Cyclones In Postseason Honors
Tyray Pearson was ISU's big winner in the postseason award sweepstakes, bringing home second-team all-Big (Associated Press & Coaches) honors and USBWA all-District VI accolades after a stellar senior campaign...Pearson was also a member of the Big 12 all-Improved team...Jake Sullivan, who was a Verizon Academic all-District VII honoree, was a third-team all-Big 12 pick by the league's coaches and a honorable mention selection by the AP...Shane Power was a honorable mention all-Big 12 by the conference's coaches...it is only the second time in the six-year existence of the Big 12 where ISU did not have a first-team all-league pick (1997-Dedric Willoughby, 1999-Marcus Fizer, 2000-Marcus Fizer and Jamaal Tinsley, 2001-Jamaal Tinsley).
Iowa State Assistant Coaches Have Missouri Ties
First-year Iowa State assistant coaches Bob Sundvold and Lance Irvin are very familiar with the Missouri basketball program...Sundvold was an assistant coach at MU under Norm Stewart for 13 seasons (1978-91)...during his tenure at MU, the Tigers qualified for nine NCAA Tournament appearances, won six Big Eight Championships and compiled 246 wins...Sundvold was on the Tiger staff when his brother, Jon, starred at MU...Jon is the seventh leading scorer (1,597) in Tiger history and was named All-American in his final season in 1982-83...Irvin never coached at Missouri, but his older brother, Byron, was also an outstanding player for the Tiger basketball team...Byron played just two seasons at MU (1987-88, 1988-89), but is the 27th-best scorer (1,096) in the history of the program...Irvin scored 708 points in his final season, averaging 19.7 ppg and earning first-team all-Big Eight honors...both Jon and Byron played in the NBA--Sundvold played with the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat and Irvin played for the Portland TrailBlazers and Washington Bullets.

Iowa State senior forward Tyray Pearson earned Phillips 66 Men's Basketball Big 12 Player of the Week, Jan. 14, after averaging 29.0 ppg and 10.5 rpg in ISU's two games during the week...Pearson was a one-man wrecking crew in the paint, helping ISU upset No. 17 Missouri (71-67) and aiding ISU's inspired effort in its 69-66 loss to No. 6 Oklahoma State...Pearson, who played all 40 minutes in both games, single-handedly took over the game against the Tigers, recording a then-career-high 28 points...Pearson, who was 13-for-23 from the floor vs. MU, scored ISU's last 11 points of the first half to keep the Cyclones at close range (MU, 29-26)...Pearson added 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the second half, propelling the Cyclones to their first victory over a ranked opponent this season...Pearson was also ISU's catalyst on the boards, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds (6 offensive, 6 defensive)...just three days later, Pearson eclipsed his career high by posting 30 points vs. No. 6 Oklahoma State...Pearson was ISU's first 30-point scorer since Martin Rancik scored 30 against Drake (Dec. 17, 2000)...Pearson posted 16 of his 30 points in the first half on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor and a 4-for-4 effort at the foul line.
The Snake-Bit Kids
Just like all sports, basketball is a game of inches...a break here, and an in-and-out there, the Cyclones could have recorded a winning record...in six of ISU's conference losses, ISU either had the lead, was tied or was down two points with less than a minute remaining in the game:

Heartbreak Hotel
Iowa State suffered more losses this season (19) than had compiled the prior two (11) seasons, but that does not mean the Cyclones have not been competitive...of the 19 Cyclone losses, only seven were over 10-point deficits...what is even more heartbreaking is ISU's chances late in the game...in six of its losses, ISU missed a last-second shot to either win or tie the contest at the end of regulation...here is a list of ISU's last-second heartbreaks:
Dec. 1, 2001- San Jose State 64, Iowa State 62
With 14 seconds left, ISU grabbed Phil Calvert's missed free throw down by two points...looking to get the ball inside to Tyray Pearson, Shane Power had the ball stripped briefly before recovering possession and attempting a three-pointer that fell short of the mark.
Jan. 12, 2002- Oklahoma State 69, Iowa State 66
Jake Sullivan went to the foul line down four points with three seconds left...Sullivan made his first, then intentionally missed his second attempt, which was batted out to midcourt where Shane Power attempted a three-pointer that was released milliseconds after the buzzer sounded.
Jan. 16, 2002- Colorado 63, Iowa State 61
Colorado's Stephanne Pelle hit a turnaround jumper with 2.9 seconds left to give CU its first lead of the second half...ISU's inbounds pass to setup the last-second attempt was stolen to end the game.
Jan. 26, 2002- Nebraska 86, Iowa State 84 (OT)
After John Robinson made two free throws to put Nebraska ahead by two points, ISU called timeout with three seconds remaining...the Cyclones inbounded the pass to halfcourt and called another timeout with 2.3 seconds remaining...with the inbounds at midcourt, Ricky Morgan threw an outstanding pass to Marcus Jefferson who launched a three-pointer that hit the back of the rim at the buzzer.
Jan. 29, 2002- Texas A&M 52, Iowa State 50
With the score 52-50, A&M's Nick Anderson missed his second free throw that was rebounded by Shane Power...Power hurried to the other end of the court and attempted the winning trey at the buzzer that hit the back of the rim.
Feb. 6, 2002- Missouri 76, Iowa State 73
When MU's Kareem Rush missed his second free-throw attempt with seven seconds remaining, it gave the Cyclones one last chance to tie the game...the Cyclones quickly dribbled up the court only to have the ball knocked out of bounds with just over one second remaining...ISU set up a play to free Jake Sullivan for the the tying shot, but his attempt banked off and hit the front of the rim to end the game...Sullivan got the shot off with two Tigers (Clarence Gilbert and Arthur Johnson) flanked on both sides of him.
March 2, 2002- Texas 79, Iowa State 76
When UT's Brandon Mouton missed his second free-throw attempt with four seconds remaining, ISU had a chance to send the game into overtime, but Jake Sullivan's three-pointer at the horn hit the back of the rim.
Surviving Through Jake
The outside shooting and overall team leadership sophomore Jake Sullivan provided for ISU was invaluable...it was been no surprise when Sullivan struggles, so do the Cyclones...in its 19 losses this season, ISU had a legitimate chance to win all but seven of those games...those seven losses (Iowa, Drake, Kansas State, Texas Tech, Kansas, Oklahoma & Missouri) are the only setbacks that were over 10-point deficits...in those seven games, sharpshooter Sullivan produced un-Jake-like numbers...listed below are Sullivan's numbers in the seven over-10-point losses for ISU.

February Was Shane Power Month
Shane Power once again improved his play during the month of February, especially from long distance...Power was 9-for-13 (69.2 percent) from three-point range in February of 2001 and went 7-for-11 (63.6 percent) from distance this past February (2002)...tallying both seasons together, Power is 16-for-24 (66.7 percent) from downtown in the month of February.
Pearson Joins Elite Double-30 Club
Iowa State senior forward Tyray Pearson became the 19th person in school history to record over 30 points twice in their respective careers when he poured in a career-high 32 points at Nebraska on Jan. 26...two weeks prior, Pearson posted his first 30-point outing with 30 points against Oklahoma State...Pearson is one of 13 players on that list that have done it twice vs. conference foes...Hercle Ivy has the most 30-point outings with 18 followed by Jeff Grayer's 15.
Sullivan Earns All-District VII And All-Big 12 Academic Honors
Iowa State sophomore guard Jake Sullivan was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VII men's basketball team selected by CoSIDA...Sullivan joins Nebraska's Cary Cochran, Creighton's Michael Lindeman, Denver's Brett Starkey and Iowa's Luke Recker on the District VII squad...Sullivan also earned first-team all-Big 12 honors.
Extra Session Depression
Iowa State lost its first overtime game of the season Jan. 26, with a 86-84 setback to Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb...ISU's overtime woes have been a sore spot for the Cyclones as of late...Iowa State has failed to win its last eight conference games that have required an extra session...the Cyclones' last overtime win in the conference was a 72-69 triumph over Nebraska, Feb. 11, 1995.

Three-Point Shooting
The differential of three-pointers shot and made between ISU and its opponents has had a major influence in the outcome of many of ISU's games...the Cyclones made 93 less three-pointers and attempted 241 less three-pointers than their opponents...13 times this season, the Cyclones made only two or less three-pointers in a game...the Cyclones were 4-10 when the opponent makes seven or more three-pointers in a game...ISU made more three-pointers in a game than its opponents only four times this season (Hartford, Colorado, Kansas, Colorado)...despite the low amount of three-pointers made, ISU still was very efficient from beyond the arc...ISU shot 38.1 percent (102-268) from downtown, ranking third in the league...the return of Jake Sullivan has definitely bolstered the ISU outside attack...during his four-game absence the Cyclones were a dismal 3-for-25 (12.0 percent) from distance...however, since his return into the ISU starting lineup, the Cyclones were 82-for-199 (41.2 percent) from three-point range in the last 21 games...the Cyclones made seven three-pointers in the last four games.
Jefferson Ties School Record In Big 12 Opener
Sophomore transfer Marcus Jefferson found his stroke in the first Big 12 game he ever competed in, making all four of his shots from three-point range...his efforts tied the school record for most three-pointers made without a miss...teammate Shane Power can also boast that feat, going 4-for-4 from three-point range last season vs. Kansas in Hilton Coliseum...Kantrail Horton is the other Cyclone to make all four of his three-point attempts, also doing it against Kansas last season...Horton's performance was at Allen Fieldhouse.
The Marathon Men
ISU's lack of depth forced the Cyclones' starting five to contribute 88.9 percent of the team's scoring...ISU had a player compete in all of the allotted minutes of a game 20 times...Shane Power went the distance 11 times, Jake Sullivan and Tyray Pearson did it four times and Marcus Jefferson tallied one complete game...Power played the first 43 minutes of ISU's overtime loss to Nebraska before fouling out, denying him another complete game...against Missouri, ISU had three players (Power, Sullivan and Pearson) play all 40 minutes, tying the school record for most complete games in a game...it has happened six times in the history of ISU basketball...the last time it happened before the Missouri game was in 1996...Jacy Holloway, Dedric Willoughby and Kenny Pratt played all 40 minutes in ISU's second round loss to Utah in the NCAA Tournament...the 1985 squad posted 26 complete games, with Barry Stevens tallying 12 and Jeff Hornacek posting 11...Hornacek has the record for most complete games in a career with 30...Power tied the school record of four consecutive complete games set by Tom Schafer during the 1986-87 season, going the distance against Penn, Savannah State, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and San Jose State...he finally got his first rest against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, playing 171 consecutive minutes...Power played 656 of ISU's 685 minutes of Big 12 play...records of minutes played were not kept until the 1978-79 season.

The Iowa State Hoosiers
The Iowa State basketball team is getting the majority of its scoring and overall production from a bunch of Hoosiers...the Cyclones had three players from the state of Indiana that played significant minutes- Shane Power (Crown Point, Ind.), Tyray Pearson (Hammond, Ind.) and Marcus Jefferson (East Chicago, Ind.)...another Cyclone, freshman Adam Schaper (Demotte, Ind.), is also on the roster...all four Indiana natives hail from the Northwest part of the state and have crossed paths throughout their prep careers...Jefferson and Pearson battled against each other in high school frequently, while Power and Schaper were on the same AAU team at one time...Power and Jefferson played against each other in high school once, with Power scoring 24 points and Jefferson tallying 22 points...both Power and Schaper played in the prestigious Indiana All-Star Classic...Power was captain of his Indiana All-Star team that featured star players such as Jared Jeffries (Indiana), Zach Randolph (Portland Trailblazers), Brett Buscher (Purdue), Austin Parkinson (Purdue), Mike Bennett (Ball State), Andre Owens (Houston) and Brody Boyd (Iowa)...57.6 percent of ISU's scoring is from the four Indiana players.
Homan's Block Party
True freshman Jared Homan gave ISU some muscle inside with his toughness and shot blocking ability...Homan led the team in blocked shots with 40 and tallied 24 blocks against Big 12 action...in his last 20 games, Homan tallied 34 blocks for a 1.7 bpg average...Homan tallied a block in 19 of the last 20 games...the son of a dairy farmer in rural Remsen, Iowa, Homan posted three four-block games this season (Morris Brown, Kansas, Texas A&M)...Homan broke the ISU freshman blocked shot record and has the fifth-most blocks in a single season for a Big 12 freshman...Homan helped ISU to a team total of 130 blocks, the third-highest total school history.

Rebound...Defend...Team Together
These are the three mental notes that Iowa State head coach Larry Eustachy instills into his players at all times...the ability to rebound and defend the goal has been the key to Coach Eustachy's success throughout his coaching career...the Cyclones finished fourth in the nation in rebound margin in 2001 and were only outrebounded four times...ISU held a 35.6-31.9 rebounding margin (+3.7) over its opponents...in Eustachy's 12 seasons as a head coach, five of his teams have finished in the top-four nationally in rebounding margin...vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Cyclones held a commanding edge on the boards, outrebounding the Panthers, 49-24...26 of ISU's rebounds were on the offensive end, led by Tyray Pearson, who had nine...ISU outrebounded Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 58-33.
Getting To The Line
A recent Iowa State trademark is its ability to get to the free throw line more often than its opponents...since 1995, three ISU teams have made more free throws than the opponent has attempted...ISU made 623 free throws to its opponents 661 attempts in 2001...this season, the Cyclones shot 172 more free throws than their opponents and made 575 while their opponents attempted 597...ISU made more free throws than its opponents attempted in 14 games this season and ISU was 12-8 when it makes more free throws than its opponents.
Defense, Defense, Defense
Another trademark of a Larry Eustachy-coached team is a solid man-to-man defense...throughout all of his coaching stops, Eustachy has emphasized a tenacious defense that forces opponents to take a shot that is heavily contested...one key stat to prove ISU's defensive prowess is opponents shooting percentage...ISU held its opponents to 41.7 shooting in 2001 and have kept up the pace in 2001-02...opponents shot 43.3 percent this season...Penn, Kansas (twice), Kansas State and Texas are the only teams to shoot over 50 percent in a game during the year...only 12 teams in the last 106 games have shot over 50 percent against ISU dating back to the 1998-99 season...the Cyclones held APB to 24.2 percent shooting, the seventh-lowest opponent output in school history.
