KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Sophomore Brittany Dalager collected 20 kills and 30 digs and junior Renae Pruess added 33 kills and nine digs as Iowa State defeated both Duquesne (3-0) and Youngstown State (3-1) to win the 2002 Kangaroo Classic Tournament. The wins improved the Cyclones' record to 9-2, which is their best start since the 1997 squad opened the 1997 season with an 8-0 start. Senior Sara Stribe, who had 103 assists on the day and 196 for the tournament, was named the tournament MVP. Dalager and Pruess were also named to the all-tournament team. Duquesne was led by Sarah Brown, who had 10 kills and 12 digs and Youngstown State was led by Colleen Royer, who had 18 kills and 10 digs.
"We had a great tourney weekend," Head Coach Linda Crum said. "The kids set a goal of ending the week 5-0 and we did that. I thought the kids played well and we look forward to starting Big 12 play this week."
In the first match against Duquesne, Dalager had 16 kills and nine digs and freshman Amanda Craig had 10 kills and 17 digs to lead Iowa State to a 3-0 win. All in all, four Cyclones had double-digit kills totals. In game one, the Cyclones had a hitting percentage of .314, including 22 kills and only six errors to win 30-22. In the second game, Duquesne hit .240 to ISU's .190, but the Cyclones had 21 kills to the Dukes' 16 to win the game, 30-27. In the third game, it was all Iowa State as the Cyclones outhit Duquesne, .333 to .113 and had 16 kills and just three errors to win, 30-24. With the loss, Duquesne's record falls to 6-3.
In Iowa State's match against Youngstown State, Pruess had a career-high 19 kills along with six digs and three other Cyclones were in double figures in the kill department to lead ISU to a 3-1 win. In the first game, Youngstown State came on strong and outhit the Cyclones, .250 to .225 and took the game, 30-28. In the second game, Iowa State came out on fire and never looked back, with 20 kills and only four errors and took game two, 30-17. Games three and four were more of the same as ISU hit .190 and .333 to YSU's -.026 and .037 to win, 30-19 and 30-23.
"I thought we had great offensive balance this weekend," Crum said. "I thought we improved a lot from the Georgia Tournament and played very well."
Iowa State starts conference play this week as it heads to Norman, Okla., to take on the sooners on Wednesday, Sept. 18. First serve is set for 7 p.m. The Cyclones will return home to take on Texas Tech on Saturday, Sept. 21. with match time at 2 p.m.
