SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Senior Katie Ruby hit a two-run homerun, but it wasn't enough as the Iowa State softball team lost a close game, 7-6, Tuesday afternoon against Texas-San Antonio. With the loss, ISU's record falls to 10-13. Senior Jen Bice and freshman Kristin Karanzias both had time on the pitching mound, with Bice picking up the loss. Sophomore Lindsey Herrin also hit a home run along with a RBI and junior Kelly Wardein had three RBI in the Cyclone effort.
The Cyclones had 10 hits in the game, compared to Texas-San Antonio's six. Iowa State scored it's first run in the first inning, but gave up three runs to the Roadrunners. The first inning proved to be the difference in the game as the Cyclones came up one run short at the end of the game. They scored two runs in the fourth inning, and two more in the seventh. Ruby hit her two-run homer in the fourth inning while Herrin homered in the sixth inning.
"I thought we played okay offensively," head coach Ruth Crowe said. "But that first inning, we really struggled and unfortunately, that put us behind from the get go. We need to come out stronger to start the game. But overall, I thought we played well."
Bice and Karanzias combined to strike out seven batters. ISU got hits from Kim Rodgers (2), Wardein (1), Herrin (3), Katie Ruby (2), Molly McNertney (1) and Cary Akins (1).
Iowa State will travel to San Marcos, Texas, to take on Southwest Texas in a doubleheader at 3 p.m., on Wednesday, March 19.
