AMES, Iowa - Iowa State junior Jake Sullivan, who was a third-team all-Big 12 Conference selection by the league's coaches and The Associated Press, received the Ralph A. Olsen Most Valuable Player Award at the 2002-03 Iowa State men's basketball banquet tonight. Sullivan, who earned Verizon Academic All-America Third-Team honors, led the Cyclones in scoring (17.0 ppg), ranking sixth in the Big 12.
A native of Oakdale, Minn., Sullivan scored 20 points or more 10 times during the season, helping him earn all-district honors from both the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Sullivan continued to be one of the most efficient free throw and 3-point shooters in school history, helping him earn both the ISU Free Throw and 3-Point Awards. He made 87.3 percent of his shots from the charity stripe, ranking second in the Big 12 and second on the school all-time charts. He currently has the best career free throw percentage in school and Big 12 history (88.6 percent). Sullivan made 67 3-pointers this year, the fifth-best single-season total in school history. He has 188 career 3-pointers and needs just three more to become the school's all-time leader.
Junior Jackson Vroman, who was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer team and was an honorable mention all-Big 12 pick, won the Outstanding Defensive and Outstanding Rebounder Awards. Vroman was ISU's most versatile player, leading the team in rebounding (9.4 rpg), field goal percentage (55.2) and double-doubles (12), and ranking second on the squad in blocks (48) and steals (31). The Bountiful, Utah, native ranked third and fifth, respectively, in the Big 12 in field goal percentage and rebounding. Vroman's 9.4 rebounding average ranked 28th nationally and was the best rebounding clip for a Cyclone since 1979.
Marcus Jefferson, a junior from East Chicago, Ind., won the Most Improved Player Award. Jefferson thrived in the sixth man role for ISU, averaging 8.4 ppg and 3.5 rpg during the season. Jefferson was at his best at the end of the season, averaging 12.1 ppg in the last seven games, scoring in double figures in five of those contests.
Point guard Tim Barnes earned the Most Assists Award, dishing out a team-high 154 assists. A junior from Henderson, Ky., Barnes ranked fourth in the Big 12 in assists and ranks 11th on the ISU single-season 3-pointers made chart with 57. Barnes, who was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer team, made 42 treys in the last 16 games.
The Louis Menze Award went to ISU's two seniors Clint Varley and Omar Bynum. Varley, a native of Menlo, Iowa, also won the Pete Taylor Mr. Hustle Award. Varley personified the toughness and work ethic of Larry Eustachy-coached teams by working his way from a walk-on to a scholarship player as a senior. Varley played in 21 games, averaging 1.7 rebounds and seeing quality minutes as the first post player off the bench late in the season. Bynum, an Omaha, Neb., native, averaged 2.9 ppg and 1.7 rpg in his final season with the Cyclones.
Freshman John Neal was named the Brian Pearson Inspiration Award winner. Neal, a walk-on from Winterset, Iowa, played 15 games for the Cyclones in his rookie campaign, seeing quality minutes as a backcourt reserve. His hard work, dedication and loyalty on the scout team was key to ISU's success.
Jake Sullivan, Jared Homan and Adam Haluska all received the ISU Academic Award.
