MADISON, Wis. - Michigan topped Iowa State 4-2 Sunday on the final day of the Rocky Rococo Wisconsin Invitational soccer tournament. The Wolverines (1-3-2) scored three first-half goals and held on to claim their first victory of the 2003 season. Iowa State falls to 2-2-1. The meeting was the first-ever between ISU and Michigan.
Therese Heaton scored the contest's first goal at the 12:59 mark off an assist by Katelin Spencer. Whitney Kjar added a goal at 22:01 and Kate Morgan scored in the 42nd minute. Robyn Vince collected two assists in the first half, and Michigan finished the opening period with a 10-3 edge in shots.
Stephanie Chavez, who collected three points on the day, gave Michigan a 4-0 lead with a goal in the 67th minute. Iowa State answered back quickly with two goals in a two-minute span. Freshman Jess Villhauer scored her first career goal at the 74:42 mark, assisted by Kristina Baumann and Kate Kirwan. Deb Benakis scored her first goal of the 2003 season in the 77th minute, with an assist from Baumann.
Michigan outshot Iowa State 22-8 and finished with an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks. Benakis led ISU with four shots, giving the sophomore midfielder a total of eight for the tournament. Baumann collected a total of four points during the Wisconsin Invitational and was named to the all-tournament team.
Michigan's Chavez was named the tournament's Offensive MVP. Nebraska defeated Wisconsin 2-1 in the tournament's final game and equaled Michigan's 1-0-1 mark at the invitational.
Iowa State will travel to Illinois State on Friday, Sept. 19.
