AMES, Iowa - Iowa State freshman Curtis Stinson claimed yet another award, earning Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors for games ending Jan. 11. It is the second Big 12 Rookie of the Week honor for Stinson and the third for a Cyclone this season. Will Blalock was Big 12 Rookie of the Week on Dec. 22.
Stinson was the difference maker for Iowa State last week, helping ISU win its first two Big 12 games. The Bronx, N.Y., guard averaged 18.5 points and made 51.8 percent of his shots during the week.
In the 70-65 win against Missouri, Stinson came up with key plays when the Cyclones needed it, helping ISU erase a seven-point deficit with 5:47 left in the game. Stinson scored 16 of his points in the second stanza, including eight points in ISU's 14-2 run in the final 5:32 of the game.
Stinson followed the Missouri game with another solid performance in the 89-74 win vs. Nebraska. He scored 15 points and dished out a game-high six assists against the Huskers. Stinson hit a 35-foot three-pointer at the first half buzzer that gave ISU a 46-35 lead at the break. He is averaging 19.5 points and is shooting 56.9 percent (41-72 FG) from the field in his last five games and leads all Big 12 freshmen in scoring at 15.5 ppg.
