AMES, Iowa - Iowa State freshman guard Curtis Stinson has been recognized as one of the top freshman in the nation by espn.com and college basketball analyst Jay Bilas. In Bilas' Jan. 9 online article, Stinson was named to the all-freshman first team through the non-conference portion of the season.
Stinson, a native of Bronx, N.Y., is off to one of the best freshman starts in school history. He became only the sixth player in school history to score 20 or more points in a game three times in his freshman season when he tallied 20 against Mercer, 27 against San Diego State and 22 in his Big 12 debut against Missouri. His 20-point effort against Mercer was the second-best freshman debut in ISU history.
Stinson has shown his versatility and all-around court game early in his career, as he leads the team in scoring (15.5), minutes played (33.3), is tied with fellow freshman Will Blalock for the team lead in steals (1.8), and is second on the squad in rebounding (6.8), assists (4.4) and field goal percentage (51.4). Stinson leads all Big 12 freshmen in scoring, ranks fifth in the league in assists and earned Big 12 Rookie of the Week for the week of Dec. 29.
ESPN.com's freshmen first team includes Stinson, Kris Humphries of Minnesota, Luol Deng of Duke, Chris Paul from Wake Forest and Texas' P.J. Tucker.
