AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team jumped to an early lead, but were unable to sustain the momentum in a 3-1 loss to Baylor this afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones won game one, 30-23, but dropped games two, three and four by scores of 30-25, 34-32 and 30-22. Iowa State moves below the .500 mark for the first time this season, as they move to 7-8 overall and 1-7 in league play, while the Bears up their season mark to 9-8 and 3-5 in the Big 12.
Iowa State drew first blood in the match with a game one victory. The Cyclones hit only .167 for the game, but held Baylor to a negative hitting percentage in the initial game. Baylor clawed back in game two, winning a 30-25 affair after jumping out to a lead midway through the game. Game three was pivotal, with ISU holding a 29-22 advantage and looking to go up 2-1 in the match. The Bears went on a rally though, capitalizing on a number of ISU hitting errors and the precise serving of setter Emily Huston to win a 34-32 decision. The Bears maintained the momentum and iced the match with a 30-22 victory.
"We just simply made too many unforced errors in today's match," said head coach Linda Crum. "If you look at the stat sheet, there were just so many errors. We couldn't afford to make those against a team that blocks as well as Baylor."
Iowa State committed 41 errors in the match, the most of the season. Iowa State did a solid job defensively, holding BU to a .115 hitting percentage, but the errors offensively held ISU's percentage to .065. The Cyclones were out blocked by the Bears as well, as Baylor had 18 blocks to ISU's 11.5 in the match.
Three ISU players recorded double-doubles in the match. Junior setter Amanda Craig had her seventh of the season with 42 assists and 14 digs. Brittany Dalager had an outstanding all-around match for ISU as well, with 10 kills and 10 digs. The senior had 44 attack attempts to lead the team.
Nicole Lorenzen was the most outstanding offensive player statistically. The redshirt sophomore from Fremont pounded 12 kills, a team-high, and added 10 digs for her fifth double-double of 2004. Lorenzen also had two service aces in the match, putting her in third place on the team in that category this season.
Another outstanding performance came from senior Kelly Melohn. Melohn, who came off the bench to serve for ISU, was perfect from behind the line, with no service errors and one ace to her credit, her first of the season. True freshman Erin Boeve led ISU in offensive efficiency, as the Steen, Minn., native slammed eight kills on 27 attempts for a .185 percentage in the match.
"We did some things well today," said Crum. "But you just can't make that many errors and win. We made to many, and it really cost us."
Iowa State returns to action on Monday, Oct. 11, in an intrastate match with the Drake Bulldogs. The match will be played in the Knapp Center in Des Moines, with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m.
