AMES, Iowa - Iowa State fell behind early in games one and two at Hilton Coliseum tonight, and were never able to recover, suffering a sweep at the hands of Big 12 rival Missouri. The Tigers won games one and two by identical scores of 30-18 and finished off ISU in game three with a 30-22 win. The Cyclones drop to 8-17 overall and 1-15 in league play while Mizzou improves to 16-6 and 11-4 in the Big 12 loop.
The Tigers dominated statistically, hitting .312 on the night while holding ISU to an .043 attack percentage. Mizzou also pounded 20 more kills and had 18 more assists than Iowa State offensively. Defensively, the Cyclones had six fewer blocks and 19 fewer digs than did MU. Missouri came into the match leading the league in kills and assists, and displayed its offensive firepower in tonight's match.
"I thought Missouri played a really great match," said ISU head coach Linda Crum. "They served at a level that kept us out of our system, and they shut down our outside hitters, who have been so good for us recently."
The Cyclones found themselves behind early in each of the first two games. Mizzou built a 9-4 advantage in game one and an insurmountable 20-12 lead in game two, en route to 30-18 decisions in both games. Iowa State was held to a negative hitting percentage in game one and hit .023 in the second game.
Iowa State came out of the break ready to play, however, and battled the Tigers hard in the deciding game. The Cyclones tallied 14 kills in the final game, headed by true freshman Erin Boeve's five. Nicole Lorenzen had three in the final frame, while Meghan Ferrie and Katie Jessen each chipped in two. ISU led 14-9 and forced a Tiger timeout, but Mizzou roared back, going on an 11-1 run, spurring them to the 30-22 game three win.
Ashlie McWee, a junior from Aurora, Colo., headed the Cyclone offensive effort tonight. McWee slammed seven kills and added two block assists for ISU. She led the team in kills for the third time this season.
"Ashlie has been really instrumental to this team the last few weeks," said Crum. "She has had a lot of enthusiasm and has provided leadership to keep us moving to where we want to go. She did some great things for us offensively in tonight's match as well."
True freshmen Erin Boeve and Meghan Ferrie were right behind McWee, as each tallied six kills in the match. Boeve, a Steen, Minn., native, is in the top five among Big 12 freshmen in six offensive categories, also recorded two block assists on the evening. Ferrie had one block assist, an assist and an ace serve.
Brittany Dalager, a senior from Minneota, Minn., who has recently taken over the libero position, led ISU in digs for the fourth consecutive match. Dalager dug out 16 balls for the Cyclones, making it the 10th time this season the senior has led ISU in digs in the match. Senior Christine Smeele and junior setter Amanda Craig also registered double-figures in digs for Iowa State with 11 each.
The Cyclones will embark on a two-game road swing to the state of Texas, as they will face Texas Tech on Saturday, Nov. 13 in Lubbock and No. 13 Texas A&M in College Station on Wednesday, Nov. 17. Each match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
