AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team, playing in its final home match of the 2004 season, came up against one of the most talented teams in the nation in No. 11 Texas, and fell short with a 3-0 sweep to the powerful Longhorns. UT won with game scores of 30-14, 30-20 and 30-14. Three Cyclone seniors played the final home match of their careers for ISU. Iowa State fell to 8-20 overall and 1-18 in the Big 12, while Texas improved to 23-3 and 15-3 in conference play.
Texas, boasting one of the tallest, most athletic lineups of any team in the country, was able to dominate ISU at the net in the match, hitting .385 while holding Iowa State to a .000 percentage, recording 23 more kills and seven more blocks than the Cyclones. The Longhorns' prolific blocking attack forced 26 Cyclone hitting errors, while UT committed only 14.
The Longhorns led for virtually the entire match, jumping out to huge leads in games one and three and cruising to identical 30-14 wins. Texas was simply overpowering offensively in those games, hitting .571 and .484, respectively, in the two easy wins. ISU presented a better defensive effort in game two, holding Texas to a .125 percentage, but were unable to stop Texas down the stretch in that frame.
Nicole Lorenzen, Iowa State's offensive workhorse, led the team with seven kills. Lorenzen, who has more attack attempts than any other Cyclone this season, had 27 more attempts in today's match, second only to teammate Katie Jessen. Lorenzen recorded a team-high in kills for the ninth time this season.
Jessen, a sophomore from Kansas City, Mo., was second on the team in kills in the match, pounding six on a team-high 29 attack attempts. Jessen, Iowa State's leader in kills this season, also added three digs and two block assists defensively.
Brittany Dalager, one of the seniors playing her final home match in Hilton Coliseum, led Iowa State in digs for the sixth straight match. Dalager, who will finish her career in the all-time top-10 in digs and kills, had nine digs in the match. Dalager is one of only four Cyclones in school history to finish in the top-10 in both digs and kills.
The two other seniors playing in front of the Cyclone faithful for the final time were Christine Smeele, a defensive specialist from Mundelien, Ill., and Kelly Melohn, an Ankeny native. Smeele had three digs and two assists, while Melohn was flawless from behind the service line in today's match.
Iowa State wraps up its season with a road match at Colorado. The Buffaloes handed the Cyclones a defeat in the first match between the squads this season, beating ISU, 3-0, on Oct. 6. The final match is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Boulder on Wednesday, Nov. 24.
