CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) - Erik Crawford scored a career-high 28 points and Ben Jacobson added 27, also a career best, to lead Northern Iowa past Iowa State 99-82 on Wednesday night.
Freshman Eric Coleman also played a huge role in the Panthers' biggest victory ever against the Cyclones, finishing with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Northern Iowa (2-1) broke a five-game losing streak against Iowa State in beating the Cyclones (3-1) for just the seventh time in 40 games. The Panthers' largest margin previously had been nine - in 1938.
Tempers flared midway through the second half after Iowa State's Jared Homan knocked UNI's Grant Stout to the floor and was called for an intentional foul. Homan immediately helped Stout up and some Northern Iowa players patted Homan on the back, but the two coaches, Iowa State's Wayne Morgan and UNI's Greg McDermott, began shouting at each other from their benches.
Morgan appeared to swear at McDermott and McDermott yelled back. Iowa State's Curtis Stinson and Northern Iowa's Brooks McKowen had to be separated near midcourt and both coaches were given technical fouls.
Northern Iowa was leading 69-41 at the time and Iowa State was making no move to get back into the game.
Homan led Iowa State with 23 points, Stinson scored 22 after getting only two in the first half and Will Blalock finished with 19.
Northern Iowa shredded Iowa State's zone defense with 10 3-pointers in the first half. Crawford and Jacobson each had two 3s as the Panthers jumped to a 20-5 lead in the first 5 minutes and Iowa State never recovered.
During one stretch, six of Northern Iowa's seven baskets were 3s as the Panthers went ahead 29-13 en route to a 44-27 halftime lead. Northern Iowa had blown an 18-point lead in a double-overtime loss at Cincinnati in its previous game, but the Panthers kept rolling this time and led by as many as 31.
Crawford finished 5-for-7 on 3-pointers and Jacobson was 5-for-9. The Panthers shot 60.3 percent overall and had 25 assists - 11 by McKowen - to just four for Iowa State.
