Ellis Hobbs Named Iowa State Football's MVP at Team Banquet

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State cornerback Ellis Hobbs, a first-team all-Big 12 selection by AP and the league's coaches, was named the school's second recipient of the Pete Taylor MVP Award at the team's banquet Sunday at the Gateway Hotel. The award is named for the 33-year voice of the Cyclones. The honor was bestowed on the senior by a vote of his teammates.

Hobbs, a senior, has made 67 tackles and four interceptions for the Independence Bowl-bound and Big 12 North Division co-champion Cyclones. He has eight career interceptions to rank eighth on the all-time Iowa State career list. He was also presented the Al and Dean Knudson Award as the team's outstanding defensive player. Hobbs shared the Jim Doran Award as the Cyclones' outstanding special teams player. Iowa State leads the Big 12 in kick return average with Hobbs averaging 24.3 yards per kickoff return and performing on other special teams. Deep snapper Landon Schrage and wide receiver Ryan Baum shared the award with Hobbs.

Hobbs was also one of eight Cyclones recognized as Winner's Performance Award recipients for players who have excelled in position techniques, consistent play, production, effectiveness and discipline. Sharing the award with Hobbs were senior linebacker Erik Anderson, senior linebacker Brandon Brown, junior nose guard Nick Leaders, senior wide receiver Todd Miller of Mount Pleasant, junior strong safety Nik Moser of Fort Dodge, junior free safety Steve Paris and senior tight end James Wright.

Freshman quarterback Bret Meyer, whose steady improvement was in lock-step with Iowa State's late season surge, was given the Ray Scott Award as the team's outstanding offensive player. Meyer has passed for 1,812 yards and 10 TDs for ISU this season, with only six interceptions. The Atlantic native also rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Fellow freshman Todd Blythe of Indianola, who as a second-team all-Big 12 wide receiver has caught a school record nine touchdown passes, earned the Durwood "Dury" Moss Award as Iowa State's outstanding newcomer.

Senior defensive end Tyson Smith and senior linebacker Brandon Brown won the Ennis Haywood Award from the team's coaches for effort in games, practice and off the field on behalf of ISU football. Miller and freshman defensive end Shawn Moorehead of Mason City were presented the Bill Dailey Award as players who made a great contribution to the team with little public recognition.

Defensive back Broc Bebout of Thurman and linebacker Boyd Viers were recognized for having the team's top two cumulative grade-point averages after finishing at least four semesters of academic study. Senior center Brian Lutter of West Des Moines and Anderson were given the Reuben J. Miller Award as Cyclone student-athletes whose conduct on and off the field has brought honor and distinction to the University.

Middle linebacker Tim Dobbins, voted the Big 12 Conference defensive newcomer of the year earlier this week by the league's coaches, earned the Don Holder Award given to the team member who handles life's challenges and adversities while competing for Iowa State.

Second-team all-Big 12 offensive lineman Cale Stubbe and Inwood senior Luke Vander Sanden were awarded the Arthur Floyd Scott award as Iowa State's best offensive linemen. Leaders, a second team all-Big 12 selection and sophomore defensive tackle Brent Curvey earned the same award as the squad's top defensive linemen.

Freshman wide receiver Chris Brown was honored as the offensive scout team player of the year. Defensive end Bryce Braaksma of Sheldon was named the defensive scout team player of the year. Freshman defensive back Brandon Hunley earned gold team scout team recognition.

Vander Sanden, Anderson, Hobbs and Stubbe were recognized for receiving the Ralph Aulmann Memorial Awards as team captains. Senior defensive back Gabe Bakker was presented the Consideration Award as voted by the program's student trainers and managers for being most considerate of both groups on and off the field.
