AMES, Iowa - Iowa State picked up its first-ever WNIT victory in its first try with a 72-59 first-round win over Idaho State Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones advance to face Miami of Ohio Friday night in Ames.
The Cyclones shot 51.7 percent from the floor and limited the Bengals to 35.4 percent accuracy, holding them well below their 74.9 points per game scoring average.
Anne O'Neil came off the bench to lead Iowa State with 16 points, while Megan Ronhovde and Lisa Kriener tallied 14 points each. Ronhovde hit 4-of-6 from behind the arc, while the Cyclones drained 9-of-22 triples in the game.
Iowa State never trailed, leading by as much as 16 in the first half. Idaho State kept in the game, narrowing the gap to single digits four times before halftime and only trailed 45-35 at the break.
Ronhovde started the scoring with a 3-pointer in the second half and the Bengals would get no closer than 10 (51-41) the rest of the way. Iowa State took its largest lead at 62-44 with 10:49 after Mary Fox put back a rebound and again at 9:53 (64-46) on a Lisa Kriener bucket.
Idaho State got a game-high 17 points from Molly Hays, the Bengals' only player in double figures. ISU hit 6-of-28 from outside (21.4 percent) after averaging 35.2 percent coming into the game.
