AMES, Iowa -- For 31 minutes Friday night, the Iowa State women's basketball team was locked in a dogfight with the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks. Only in the last nine minutes of the contest did the Cyclones manage to secure a lead, and ISU walked out of Hilton Coliseum with a 71-57 WNIT victory, advancing to the quarterfinal round.
Miami (22-9) started the game on fire, hitting 10 of its first 19 shots. The RedHawks opened a 24-12 first-half lead as Iowa State (17-14) struggled to find a rhythm on offense. ISU attempted only 12 shots in the first 12 minutes of the game, making just four.
Iowa State was able to rally and tie the game at 24-24 with 4:14 remaining in the first half, thanks in large part to seven quick points from point guard Lyndsey Medders and a 3-pointer from Mary Fox. Medders finished the game with 14 points and five assists, while Fox added 12 points (on four 3-pointers) in a reserve role.
The contest went back and forth until the half, with Miami claiming a 31-29 lead at the break. The second half opened in the same fashion as the first half closed, with neither team able to open a lead of more than four points until a pair of Medders free throws put ISU up 58-53 with 7:40 to play. Those free throws were near the start of a 15-0 run over 8:40, putting the Cyclones ahead 69-53 and the game effectively out of reach.
Guard Anne O'Neil made 11 of her 12 free-throw attempts on the evening, including a perfect 8-of-8 in the second half. O'Neil made only one field goal, but finished with 13 points. Megan Ronhovde again provided an offensive spark for ISU, scoring a team-high 15 points. Ronhovde was 5-of-8 from the field, and made four 3-pointers.
Iowa State advances to the third round of the WNIT and will play host to the winner of the Seton Hall-St. Joseph's game. The quarterfinal game will be played in Hilton Coliseum on Thursday, March 25. Game time has not been determined. Early ticket order information will be available on cyclones.com at noon on Sunday, March 21.
