AMES, Iowa - Iowa State advanced to the WNIT final round of four with a 66-58 thriller over Saint Joseph's in Hilton Coliseum Thursday night. The Cyclones have won six straight at home and will play host to UNLV in a WNIT semifinal game in Hilton Sunday at 2 p.m.
ISU got 19 points from freshman point guard Lyndsey Medders, while Mary Fox and Anne O'Neil added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Senior Erica Junod pulled down 10 rebounds, while Megan Ronhovde had nine boards.
Iowa State trailed most of the first half, thanks to poor shooting (33.3 percent) and rebounding woes. Saint Joseph's owned a 22-17 rebounding edge at the half, but Iowa State had just three boards to SJU's 10 just minutes into the game.
Medders went into the locker room with a team-leading nine points, hitting both 3-point attempts. The Cyclones had six treys at the break, helping them stay in the game and take a 27-26 lead at the 2:23 mark that would stand at the buzzer.
The second half featured 11 lead changes and six ties. Iowa State got on the board first with a putback by Ronhovde. SJU's Irina Krasnoshiok scored nine of her team-high 13 points in the second half, sinking three 3-pointers.
The Cyclones took over the lead for good (57-56) on a Medders layup with 2:20 left in the game. ISU forced a Hawk turnover and Fox hit a 3-pointer that brought the sold-out crowd of 14,092 to its feet and put Iowa State up 60-56 with 1:32 left.
ISU sank 6-of-8 free throws to close out the game and advance to the WNIT semifinals. The Cyclones, in their first-ever trip to the WNIT, have won three-straight games and own six consecutive home wins.
