AMES, Iowa - Jake Sullivan scored 22 points and Curtis Stinson added 20 to lead Iowa State to a 77-69 win Thursday night over Marquette, sending the Cyclones on their first trip to the NIT's Final Four.
After trailing by six points midway through the first half, the Cyclones (20-12) took control of the game by outscoring Marquette 31-13 in the final seven minutes of the first half and the first six minutes after the break.
Iowa State used a relentless defense to keep Marquette's top shooters in check most of the game, holding the Golden Eagles (19-12) to 39-percent shooting and just 33 percent from 3-point range.
Travis Diener, who led Conference-USA in scoring, got into foul trouble early and scored 17 points. He left the game late in the second half after injuring his ankle on a fast-break collision and never returned.
Iowa State also got 14 points and 12 rebounds from Jackson Vroman as the Cyclones snapped a three-game losing streak to Marquette.
Stinson, one of the top freshman in the Big 12 this season, was 7-of-14 shooting and also grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Cyclones shot 49 percent and made 50 percent of their 3-pointers. Iowa State also won the foul-shooting battle, hitting 24 of 38 from the line, including 11-of-12 by Sullivan. Marquette made 12 of 21 free throws.
The Cyclones will play Rutgers in the semifinals Tuesday in New York.
