AMES, Iowa -- Stevie Hicks rushed for 164 yards on 21 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Cardinal team (1st & 4th teamers) to a 27-21 win over the White squad (2nd & 3rd) in the Iowa State spring game at Jack Trice Stadium. The White team was spotted a 21-0 lead before the game began.
Hicks scored on a 64-yard run on the first series of the game. It was Hicks who scored on an eight-yard run with 4:27 left in the game that gave the Cardinal team the victory.
"Stevie Hicks had three or four runs today that looked like he could be something special," Iowa State head coach Dan McCarney said. "We just need him to make those runs consistently. He is going to have a tremendous career here. He's got some real special talents. He ran for almost 130 yards against Missouri last season in tough conditions and that was a sign of things to come."
In total, the Cardinal team outgained the White squad, 417-228. Freshman quarterback Bret Meyer, playing in his first spring game, finished the game completing 10-of-25 passes for 89 yards, playing mostly with the first-teamers. His counterpart, sophomore Austin Flynn, playing mostly with the White squad, completed 6-of-11 passes for 97 yards. He also rushed for 53 yards. Meyer rushed for 35 yards.
"Bret Meyer did some good things, made some mistakes, but looked like a first-year player in his first game at Iowa State," McCarney said. "Bret is very elusive. He doesn't have lightning speed but has great feet. He'll learn so much from today's game. We are better at quarterback today than at any time last year."
Freshman Jason Scales led the White team, rushing for 40 yards on 14 carries. Freshman Todd Blythe led all receivers with six receptions for 73 yards for the Cardinal team. Sophomore Ryan Baum had five catches for 58 yards. Senior Andy Kohler made three catches for 77 yards for the Cardinal team, including a 60-yard reception from Kyle VanWinkle that set up Hicks' final score.
"We caught the ball well today," McCarney said. "Andy Kohler showed size, speed and ability along with Todd Miller and Ryan Baum. The secondary lacks some depth but our offensive line made huge strides. Our whole football team has to become a lot stronger, more physical and more explosive when August comes."
Linebacker Brandon Brown led the Cardinal team with eight tackles. Defensive end Jason Berryman made seven tackles, had two sacks and made 2 1/2 stops behind the line of scrimmage. Linebacker Dominique Flower made six tackles and broke up two passes for the White team.
"We have some young leaders on this team that will challenge for starting positions," McCarney said. "There will be a lot of competition for the 22 starting spots before the first game against UNI. The kids are so hungry to be winning again and be respectable. We moved the ball well today at times but we need to be more consistent. There are a lot of young guys on this team that will be the best players on the squad."
