AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State volleyball team played its final spring season tournament at home on April 17, hosting the Spring Fling Tournament with Creighton, Drake, South Dakota State and Minnesota State. The Cyclones posted a 2-2 record in the tournament and came away from the spring season with a 5-3 overall record.
The Cyclones fell to South Dakota State in its first match, 1-2 (32-30, 21-30 and 10-15). They bounced back to beat Minnesota State, 2-0 (32-30 and 31-29), in the next match. The Cyclones suffered their second loss of the tournament to Creighton, 0-2 (26-30 and 29-31) before bouncing back to defeat Drake, 2-0 (30-19 and 30-22) in the team's last game of the tournament.
According to head coach Linda Crum, the tournament went well and there were some good things that came out of it to build on for next fall.
“I thought it was a great tournament,” Crum said. “The quality of the teams in the tournament was very good. I thought we were a little inconsistent in some areas, but in other areas we did very well. I was pleased with the kids. We're still making progress and it's been a great spring to gain experience.”
The Cyclones will begin the 2004 season when they travel to Auburn, Ala., to take part in the Auburn tournament on Sept. 3-4.
