AMES, Iowa - Iowa State head football coach Dan McCarney will start redshirt freshman Bret Meyer of Atlantic in the Cyclones' Sept. 4 season opener against Northern Iowa at Jack Trice Stadium. McCarney also said that sophomore signal-caller Austin Flynn will also see action against UNI.
"They will both play in the first half," McCarney said. "I can't tell you what the rotation will be but both have done good things for us. After 10 scrimmages it was time to make a choice."
Meyer led undefeated Atlantic to the Iowa Class 3-A state championship in 2002, throwing for more than 1,800 yards with 20 touchdown passes. Flynn, a native of Deer Park, Texas, averaged 148.5 yards of total offense per game for the Cyclones in 2003. He started seven games.
McCarney also announced that walk-on redshirt senior center Brian Lutter has been awarded a scholarship. The former West Des Moines-Valley prep is a physical education major who has made the Dean's List the last three years at Iowa State and has earned a spot on the Big 12 Commissioner's academic Honor Roll seven times.
