SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Iowa State Cyclones finished off a successful weekend at the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, with a victory over host University of Texas-San Antonio in five games. The Cyclones captured games one, two and five to defeat the Roadrunners in the final match of the UTSA Invitational, played at the UTSA Convocation Center. ISU finished 2-1 at the event, with wins over Prairie View A&M and UTSA and a loss to Rice.
"I was really pleased how we played tonight," said associate head coach Amy Farber Knowles. "We really played great in the first two games, then we just went flat in games three and four. We changed the lineup for game five and that seemed to give us a spark. We finally took care of business with that unit in game five."
Iowa State dominated statistically, but were unable to put away UTSA after capturing the first two games of the match, 30-16 and 30-25. The Cyclones out hit the Roadrunners, with 75 kills to UTSA's 54 and a hitting percentage of .210 as compared to the Roadrunners' .105 mark. ISU had 70 assists to UTSA's 49 and also recorded 11 service aces while UTSA notched only six. Iowa State had five players who recorded double-digit kill tallies, while the Roadrunners had only three.
The Cyclones were led by redshirt sophomore Nicole Lorenzen in the match. Lorenzen, a native of Fremont, recorded her third double-double of the young season, smashing 17 kills to go with 17 digs. Lorenzen sparkled behind the serving line for ISU as well, recording five aces to lead the team.
"Nicole was really a key for us all weekend," Knowles said. "We moved her to the right side for a while, and she was really effective hitting the ball. But just as important was the way she served, I think it was a strength for us all weekend."
Amanda Craig had a strong match for ISU as well. The junior setter from West Des Moines racked up 64 assists in the match, a season-high. Craig added four kills to the Iowa State offensive effort. Craig was outstanding defensively as well, notching 11 digs and assisting on four blocks for the victorious Cyclones.
Ashlie McWee continued her strong play in the second weekend of the season. The Aurora, Colo., native had 16 kills and a .300 hitting percentage in the match. McWee continued to dominate the net defensively as well, as she tallied nine block assists for ISU.
Freshman Meghan Ferrie continued to prove her talents early in her first collegiate season, as the Lee's Summit, Mo., native pounded 12 kills and led ISU in hitting percentage for the match with a .391 attacking efficiency. Ferrie had an outstanding weekend for the Cyclones, smashing 25 kills.
Brittany Dalager led ISU's defensive effort for the second-consecutive night as the senior from Minneota, Minn., notched 23 digs and an assist for the Cyclones. Katie Churm, ISU's libero, tallied 15 digs and Christine Smeele, another defensive specialist, recorded 15 as well. McWee led the defensive effort at the net with her nine block assists, while Lorenzen and Craig each added four.
"Our defense was excellent again for the most part," said Knowles. "Brittany and Christine were great and really provided us with some leadership. Churm was outstanding passing the ball again for us, and really allowed us to run our offense well."
The match concluded a stretch of seven road games to open the season for ISU. Iowa State went 6-1 in that stretch, including last weekend's tournament title at the Mizuno/Auburn Challenge. Iowa State's next competition will take place on the home floor of Hilton Coliseum that coincides with the first Big 12 contest of the season. ISU will challenge highly-ranked Texas A&M in Ames on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m.
