Iowa State-Northern Iowa Game Quotes
Iowa State Head Coach Dan McCarney
"I am real proud of our guys. We made a few mistakes, but it was a good win. I have a lot of respect for UNI, they will win a lot of games this year."
On our defense. "Nobody from UNI got behind our defensive backs. We were real sound in coverage and tackled well. We didn't miss a lot of tackles today."
About our progress..."I have felt better about this team since the day we started. We didn't turn the ball over, and made plays when we needed to."
"Iowa is going to be an unbelievable challenge next week. We aren't going to take giant steps right away, but we are going to build on what we did today."
On special teams... "Tony could have gone today, but we wanted him 100 percent for next week. I am really proud of Bryan Jansen, only missed one field goal today. We need to need to work on our snaps this week. Blankenship really stepped it up. We were solid on special teams today. We didn't get any turnovers today. We had chances, but dropped the ball on both occasions."
On the running game... "We have to run the ball...we weren't quite as physical as we wanted to be. We need to continue to challenge guys and get Stevie going."
On Meyer and Flynn situation... "We had a rotation set up regardless of the score. Austin came in and did some great things and kept his head up the whole time. He has really adapted to the team concept."
Iowa State's Todd Blythe
"We made some mental mistakes, but we played tough. We'll have to dial it up a bit against Iowa next week."
"The defense really came out and played wonderful; the quarterbacks were great, whoever was in came out and made the plays."
Iowa State's Tyson Smith
"It was real nice to come back out today with all the fans' support and play all the way through the game."
"My adrenaline was pumping, to get to come out and help my team again."
"Iowa's a good team and we'll have to prepare well for them. They'll bring their best and so will we."
Iowa State's Stevie Hicks
"It was nice to pick up our first win, we came out hard in the first series."
"We had a few errors and we'll try to get them corrected for next week. We've been looking forward to playing Iowa from the beginning, we just hope to hold on to this momentum from the first game."
Northern Iowa Head Coach Mark Farley
On offense... "It's not what I expected. I'm disappointed, not mad about our performance on offense."
On ISU... "I thought they were consistent and determined. Last year they were erratic. This year they were consistent and played four focused quarters and they wore on us.
On UNI's performance... "We couldn't move the football and we left the defense on the field for too many plays. We stopped ourselves.
What's next... "Our defense was better than I thought it would be but had too many mistakes. We're going to go back to the drawing board to get the most out of our team. I'm concerned so we're going to put on the brakes and redirect some things. We have a good football team but it's out mistakes that hindered us."
Northern Iowa Player Terrance Freeney
"We came in here today expecting to play and compete. The juices were pumping and some guys made some mistakes, including myself. We will improve. We will keep our heads up and go into the next game excited. We left everything on the field. They were much better than I expected. As far as our gameplan, we were not expecting them to blitz that much and took awhile for us to figure it out. We kind of beat ourselves, but they also did some great things."
Northern Iowa Player Tom Petrie
"I don't think we performed as well as we hoped. I did not get it done today. I did not execute the plays and we just never played with confidence."
"ISU did a great job. I take my hat off to them. They flat out outplayed us. I was surprised how we did not get anything going. We just have to regroup for next week, and we will."
